We Have Arrived

If you’ve been listening to Wellness Force for awhile, or if you’ve been with us since the beginning, you know by now that great things tend to take us time, effort, and the hardest one of them all - trusting the process - especially when it comes to our wellness. For episode 100, I’m walking you through nine of my favorite moments over the past 100 interviews, to pull the gems of wisdom, moments of laughter, and the real life action steps that I've learned to both trust and believe in.

I want to share my truth: This entrepreneurial and podcast path has not been 100% rainbows. Even since early childhood, I have known, deep down, that I march to the beat of a different drummer. Maybe you feel that too, and that’s why you’re here. I’ve faced inner and outer demons I wouldn’t wish on anyone, and since I woke up in 2011, I’ve done some really, really, hard work to let go of old stories about genetics, beliefs, and the people and things that don't serve my wellness. But yet as hard as this has been, I’ve also learned that when you operate from a place of love and service to others, and if you really want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.

This podcast has been my home, my work, and my life for almost two years now, and today, I get to give thanks to YOU.

9 World Class Wellness Influencers In 2017

David Zappasodi

First up is my good friend and best-selling author of Immovable Heart, Unstoppable Mind, David Zappasodi. In our first clip, we’re talking about why wellness and achievement live in two different worlds. After 20 plus years as health and wellness professional, David believes that there is one universal reason that blocks most people from letting go off old their old weight. Let’s hear what and why right now with David, and be sure to listen to episode 072 for the full show.

Michael Strasner

Michael Strasner is one of the most respected leading experts in personal transformation, and taught me in person how to open my heart in the advanced emotional intelligence and leadership course that changed my compass forever. This was a really emotional episode for me as from Micheal’s teachings, I was able to connect with my father after 2 years of not speaking, and let go of some weight I’d been carrying around for years. In this clip, Michael is talking with us about the difference between our feelings and emotions, and commitment to self, how we can harness energy to guide us towards wellness without letting emotions hold us back. Let’s drop in with Michael, and be sure to listen to episode 027 for the full show.

Tom Bilyeu

Our next clip is with a powerful speaker, health entrepreneur, the co-founder of Quest Nutrition and the Host of Impact Theory, Tom Bilyeu. In this segment, Tom is talking about the promises we keep to ourselves and why. How his mission now with Impact theory spearheading a movement to facilitate mental transformation, both through its empowering content and by accelerating the businesses and entrepreneurs destined to change the world. Tom wants to free people from The Matrix. Said another way, he wants to end the poverty of poor mindset. Tom dives into what the no BS answer is that will help end metabolic disease and how understanding mythology and rituals can empower us in our wellness journey. Let’s listen in with Tom now and be sure to check out episode 098 for the full show.

Bonnie Kelly

Our next guest is going to take you to the basement for some cleaning! In a good way. Bonnie Kelly, author, speaker, certified coach and my friend returns to wellness force radio to talk about her new book True To Your Core and how we perceive, interrupt, and experience reality is unique to all of us, just like your thumb print. Bonnie is talking about why neurologically, we are an endangered species. Bonnie is an expert in personal development and helping people heal from their past, and in this short clip she's explaining the science and real talk about how our brain chemistry is just like a computer, and like any computer, it can be reprogrammed with inspired action. From upgrading our subconscious beliefs to what it really takes to write a new story, Bonnie is giving us the clarity and the insights on why we do, what we do. Be sure to check out episode 087 for the full show.

Nir Eyal

Nir Eyal is a best-selling author, speaker, and behavior change jedi-master that is educating people on how to build the sometimes challenging healthy habits we need to thrive in this technologically modern world. With the buzzing from apps, devices, and notifications pulling us away from our personal connections and conversations, Nir is teaching us about what he has come to know as the “Hook Model.” This is how companies create behaviors with technology that can benefit their users, or, turn them into addicts depending on their intention. In this clip, Nir pulls back the curtain for a look behind how companies use psychology to capture our attention, including triggers, actions, variable rewards and investment. Once we know how they do it, we can then consciously choose where we put our attention and avoid being disconnected from the relationships we care about. We can use technology to give us wellness, rather than take it away. You can hear Nir’s full story and mission on episode 048.

Daniel Schmachtenberger

Prepare to get you brain fed high octane on our next clip. Daniel Scmachtenberger, the Co-Founder of The Neurohacker Collective, shares far beyond how a Nootropics like Qualia can provide a comprehensive hardware upgrade for radical cognitive enhancement and emotional resilience, but also how he believes it creates the building blocks towards a better planet. Daniel is sharing his brilliant mind and expertise of the body and brain to teach us the why, how, and what these cognitive enhancers can do the health and speed of our mind. The was one of my all time favorite episodes on the podcast where I shared my n=1 experiment using nootropics, so be sure to download episode 096 for the full story.

Lisa Perkins

This is where we trust our process. Lisa Perkins my friend and nutrition expert, is uncovering exactly how we can trust ourselves when it comes to food, by using intuition, time, and focused attention. Lisa shares about how when it comes to nutrition, rules minus relationship equals rebellion. When we impose rules upon ourself without first trusting the promises we make to our body about nourishing it, it’s going to end in rebellion. She believes that easy is earned; in the beginning of any nutrition program, you’ll have to pay attention to yourself just like if you were learning any new skill. Lisa not only has the science and accredited background as a precision nutrition coach, but she also has a heart of gold. Click on episode 085 for the full show with Lisa.

Ryan Yokome

What happens in your physical body when you hear the word money? Do you get loose or get tight? Our next clip is with Ryan Yokome, an internationally recognized expert in the field of personal transformation. Ryan is the CEO of Money & Miracles Breakthrough Coaching and essentially he believes that money is just an exchange of energy. The challenge comes when we have an unhealthy relationship with our energy around money that can deflect it. Ryan has an extraordinary presence you’ll feel in this clip. He shares about how a lack of expression as a teen blocked his physical and financial wellness as an adult, and the stages of work he went through to overcome the block to call in the money and health he always wanted. Set your player for episode 079 to hear the full show.

Dan Pardi

Our last clip is with a man who needs no introduction - health and human behavior specialist, Dan Pardi. Dan’s return to Wellness Force Radio is shining light on how we can use what he calls HumanOS to cut through the noise of the overwhelming information online so we can really find the health we’re looking for. Dan’s mission and his systems of finding the right answers for our mind, body, and spirit are so profound, we put his voice in our show intro. So in this final clip, Dan shares why no matter how much we know, it won't always inspire us to take the right actions. "Knowing without doing is the same thing as not knowing. What matters is if the knowledge that you have will give you an effective health practice for the long term.” Dan is one of my most trusted sources for wellness so you’ll want to download episode 088 for later.

Ted Ryce is a 20 year Celebrity Fitness Expert, Keynote Speaker, Corporate Wellness Coach and Host of the Legendary Life Podcast

In his dynamic health and wellness career, Ted has worked with Fortune 500 CEOs, busy professionals and celebrities, including Richard Branson, Ricky Martin and Robert Downey Jr. by helping his clients develop high-performance habits that help them manage stress, adversity, and lead more successful lives.

His philosophy is that being a high-performance person, one who chases and achieves their biggest goals, isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity to survive and thrive in the modern world.

Listen to Episode 099 as Ted Uncovers

  • How we can begin to take the initial steps towards sleeping, eating, and moving better amidst all of our constant distractions.
  • Strength training can benefit your entire mind and body by releasing beneficial hormones.
  • We can still maintain a high level of fitness and strength well into old age through sustainable training.
  • What periodization is and how it can help our bodies become stronger.
  • Who the best sources of health and wellness information are.
  • How we can use eccentric isometric and yielding isometric exercises to help stimulate and strengthen the muscle.
  • How long should we work out for? Understanding your body type is key to selecting what workouts to do and for how long you should be doing them. Some different body types include endomorph, ectomorph, and mesomorph.
  • Implement habit change with nutrition and movement to help you turn your health around.
  • How we all have a "fat thermostat" that affects our hormones and influences our emotional state. Changing habits will be better for our emotions compared to crash diets.
  • Avoid decision fatigue and plan to eat healthy while avoiding sugary snacks.
  • To sleep better, pay attention to the quality of your sleep: track your sleeping habits, stay away from electronic devices, lower the temperature in your bedroom, use devices or apps to help if necessary, and learn to balance your exercise routine.
  • Sleep quality usually depends on light, noise, temperature, and sound so make sure you create the best sleeping environment for your needs.

Top 3 Takeaways From The Show

  • We need to get in touch with what our bodies are telling us. No one truly knows our bodies better than we do ourselves and we're the only ones that can fix any problems that we have. To become healthier, we need to start listening to our bodies and making healthy changes that are in accordance with our limits.
  • With so much constant information available to us, it's hard to know who you can trust. Seek out the right health tips and guidance from people who are constantly evolving and willing to change their philosophies. They're willing to experiment and learn by trying new diets, exercise, and wellness technology.
  • To achieve sustainable health, focus on movement, sleep, and nutrition.  To stay strong, fit, and active, muscle stimulation will help you become stronger and healthy. Sleep is so important for our bodies and we need it to be able to function. If you're not sleeping enough to restore your lost energy, you should take a look at your nighttime ritual and see if you can improve it.

Power Quotes From Ted Ryce

"You've gotta set yourself up for success because willpower won't get you there." - Ted Ryce

"We are ancient bodies in a modern world. We have hunter-gatherer genes. We are designed to hunt for our foods, to be outside, to get sun in our skin. We're now really out of sync with where we came from." - Ted Ryce on how we live today compared to our ancestors.

"If wake up in the morning and you don't feel good, you're fatigued, and then you've got brain fog, you've gotta look at your lifestyle and you've gotta learn the rules of the human body. There's no psychologist that's going to fix that. There's no medication you'll be able to take that'll be able to fix your problem if you're living too out of sync with what your genes need to function optimally." - Ted Ryce on why we should focus on listening to our bodies for optimal health.

"I want everyone listening to understand that you can maintain a high level of fitness, strong muscles, and a healthy body well into old age." - Ted Ryce on why sustainable health is attainable

"You have to pay attention to your body and yes, you have to work, but pushing too hard is what we call over-reaching because you should never push so long that it turns into over-training. If you're over-reaching to the point that it's affecting your sleep, that shouldn't be done for no more than a week." - Ted Ryce on  how much we should exercise so that we can still sleep well at night

"You gotta know your limits and you gotta understand these physiological processes that are trying to push your behavior in certain ways. You gotta do things for you that can become a lifestyle. When you do that, everything becomes easier." - Ted Ryce on why changing habits can turn around our lives for the better

"We are not designed to go without sleep. It has a high cost and if you're struggling to get going, you better start looking into your nighttime ritual." - Ted Ryce on the importance of sleep

"There is a solution to every problem. It may not be the solution that you want, it may not be the solution that you were hoping for, but there is a solution to every single problem. And in a world where we have so much access to information and there's 7 billion people on this planet, you are not alone and someone has figured it out. The solution is out there; never give up and never stop searching."  - Ted Ryce's mantra for when he's going through a difficult time.

"Once you realize that you can do anything that you set your mind to, how you spend your time becomes a spiritual consideration." - Tom Bilyeu

Tom Bilyeu is the founder and host of Impact Theory and the co-founder of Quest Nutrition.

After spending six years growing Quest into a billion-dollar company by helping people transform their bodies, Tom is now focused on completing the second half of his mission: transforming people’s minds through his new venture with Impact Theory.

Impact theory is a show spearheading a movement to facilitate mental transformation, both through its empowering content and by accelerating the businesses and entrepreneurs destined to change the world.

Impact Theory's mission is to free people from The Matrix. Said another way, they want to end the poverty of poor mindset.

How To Become A Master of Your Mind: Tom Bilyeu, Co-Founder of Quest Nutrition & Founder of Impact Theory

Tom Bilyeu is the co-founder of 2014 Inc. 500 company Quest Nutrition — a unicorn startup valued at over $1 billion — and the co-founder and host of Impact Theory. Tom’s mission is the creation of empowering media-based IP and the acceleration of mission-based businesses. Personally driven to help people develop the skills they will need to improve themselves and the world, Tom is intent to use commerce to address the dual pandemics of physical and mental malnourishment.

Tom regularly inspires audiences of entrepreneurs, change makers, and thought leaders at some of the most prestigious conferences and seminars around the world, including Abundance 360, A-fest, and Freedom Fast Lane. Tom has also been a guest on the Tony Robbins podcast and The School of Greatness podcast and has been featured in Forbes, Inc., Success, and The Huffington Post. Tom is currently on the Innovation Board of the XPRIZE Foundation.

Listen to Episode 098 as Tom Uncovers

  • Tom's experience working for a corporate business, what he learned from it, and how it motivated him to become an entrepreneur.
  • The story behind why Tom started Impact Theory and the mission behind it.
  • The beginning of Quest Nutrition and how the brand grew to address health and wellness issues.
  • Where Tom's insatiable curiosity comes from and how we can allow our own excitement to grow as well.
  • The pros and cons of creating something that we want to share with the world when we focus on becoming a champion in our field.
  • How to become aware of our negative thoughts and ultimately change our habitual methods of thinking.
  • Using language to reinforce mentality and values.
  • Learn how to go from a fixed, negative mindset to to a more flexible, positive one.
  • How Tom stopped comparing himself to others and got rid of negative thoughts about himself.
  •  When Tom began to see himself as a radical learner.
  • Discovering our inner compass to understand our vulnerability and ourselves better.
  • Understanding that we're not born with instincts. We train our instincts by learning from our mistakes.
  • Tom's view on Law of Attraction: It helps improve our emotions, but won't give us want we want. We have to work for want we want by improving our skill set.

Top 3 Takeaways From The Show

  • Discover what makes you excited and allow that feeling to grow on its own. Let an idea capture your attention and focus on it.
  • To understand habitual negative thinking, we need to learn how the brain works and why we make these thought connections. In order to mentally grow and get rid of old software, we can build one skill after another to improve our mindset.
  • We can learn to become antifragile to negative thoughts. We can end negative thinking  about ourselves by not fighting it, but by learning and growing from our life experiences. If you attack negative thoughts, they will only grow stronger.

Power Quotes From Tom

"Once you realize that you can do anything that you set your mind to, how you spend your time becomes a spiritual consideration." - Tom Bilyeu

"Wellness is really a 360 degree endeavor. It's not just the body, it's the mind as well." - Tom Bilyeu on wellness

"By letting an idea capture your attention, really focusing on it, going deep, and asking how is this usable and then putting it to use in your life and taking those steps to act on the things that you learn; you get a sense of this self reinforcing cycle." - Tom Bilyeu on how we can get excited about an idea.

"Stop worrying about being a champion and start worrying about becoming capable of the championship performance. Because that's totally different. That's about grinding it out and earning skills through hard work, actually becoming good, and becoming capable of the extraordinary."  - Tom Bilyeu on how acquiring a skill set can make us unstoppable

"The big breakthrough in my life was the day I stopped thinking of myself as smart because I wasn't and I started thinking of myself as a learner."  - Tom Bilyeu on how he defeated negative thinking and stopped comparing himself to other people.

"We are wired to support the tribe. We are wired to support other people and this will give us fulfillment and purpose. There is nothing more pleasurable from a neurochemical standpoint than that."  - Tom Bilyeu on the power of helping each other become better.

[tweetthis]"Wellness is really a 360 degree endeavor. It's not just the body, it's the mind as well." - @TomBilyeu of @impact_theory on wellness[/tweetthis]

"Optimists tend to be stronger responders to placebos. The placebo effect is a pervasive phenomenon; in fact, it is part of the response to any active medical intervention. The placebo effect points to the importance of perception and the brain's role in physical health. The opposite of a Placebo Effect is a Nocebo Effect. A Nocebo effect causes the perception that the phenomenon will have a negative outcome to actively influence the result. Pessimism may now be correlated with the Nocebo Effect.' - Jesse Lawler on WFR 097

Brainpower Upgrade

For anyone who's ever been interested in increasing their brainpower and learning more about what their body is capable of and how to get started, this is a great Wellness Force Radio podcast episode for you to listen to!

What an amazing time for all of us to be alive with all of this technology to help us enhance and improve our minds and bodies. On this week's episode, I had an incredible conversation with previous WFR guest, Axon Labs Founder, and Smart Drug Smarts (SDS) Podcast Host, Jesse Lawler about smart drugs, meditation, the placebo effect, and how we can take that next step forward to learning more about ourselves.

If you tuned into last week's episode with Daniel Schmachtenberger, we dive even deeper this week to uncover how smart drugs like nootropics not only alter or state of consciousness, but how they can help benefit our lives and wellness as well.

Enhance Your Brainpower With Smart Drugs

"Smart drugs are a part of a wide family that doesn't really have a common starting point." - Jesse Lawler

Jesse explains that there is one main, common misconception about the origins of smart drugs. It's a popular disbelief that all of the smart drugs that are out there just operate in the same way. Many believe that they're similar to the drugs (Ritalin and Adderall ) that are used to help ADHD.

However, there's so much more to smart drugs than we originally thought was possible.

Smart drugs don't have one common root and each one individually helps us to enhance different cognitive senses:

  • Memory
  • Mood
  • Energy
  • Focus

How to Choose the Perfect Smart Drug for You

If you're curious in trying a smart drug, don't rush into taking anything immediately without giving yourself enough time to think if it's right for you.

A lot of us already take a common cognitive enhancer: Coffee.

Consider if coffee already helps you achieve what you want more of: energy, focus, or mood. A lot of us already know our limits with coffee and we can only drink so much of it before we become over anxious and jittery. If the right amount of coffee (1-3 cups or more if need be) already gives you what you want when you need it, do you really need to add a nootropic to the combination?

Today it's quite popular to add different substances to your coffee and Bulletproof Coffee is a great example of that.  Some people like adding aniracetam, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter to their coffee, but it might not be for everyone.

When trying a new smart drug, you have to take it one step at a time to see how different combinations affect you. Keep in mind that  you don't have to try everything to see what affect it will have on you.

If you already have a good idea of what can happen when you take a smart drug and you don't think it will benefit you, then you can avoid taking it without the trial period.

Alternatives to Taking Smart Drugs

As already mentioned, coffee is a great cognitive enhancer without someone needing to take additional smart drugs.

Another one is green tea. Green tea contains ethylene and GABA which has the same effect on the body as coffee does except it's much more gentler. Green tea doesn't have caffeine so it will help you be focused and calm without the jittery side effects.

Achieve a New State of Consciousness

"Stay curious and be open to exploring different states of consciousness. Look for anything that will help you improve your health." - Josh Trent

Today, we are discovering that there is a large variety of different ways that we can achieve a new state of consciousness.

How can smart drugs help us achieve consciousness?

Specific smart drugs have been created help us improve our memory, creativity, and attentiveness.

Jess said that in general, our brain is able to keep track of 7 ideas in our working memory at a time (some people are able to take on between 5-9 ideas, but 7 is the average). But if you're able to add just one more working memory to the mix, think about what else you could achieve!

Why are tech CEOs in Silicon Valley microdosing on LSD?

Psychedelics have been used regularly to help people be more creative in their field and it's certainly gaining momentum for top executives in Silicon Valley.

This might appear to be just a hippie phenomenon, but CEOs are finding that small doses of LSD are helping them do more than they could have done before. Even former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, credited LSD to influencing his progress in the world of technology.

We're not supporting the use of LSD, but it's fascinating that psychedelic use is now encouraging further research into how LSD affects the mind and our state of consciousness.

Learn more in Jesse's interview with Dr. James Fadiman on the use of psychedelics to achieve a new state of consciousness.

Using Oxygen to Enhance Our Consciousness: Holotropic & Wim-hof Breathing

Believe it or not, oxygen is a natural drug that can take you to a new state of consciousness. There are two types of breathing techniques that you can use to get you to the state that you want to achieve: Grof's Holotropic Breathwork and the Wim-hof breathing technique.

Ayahuasca: A Natural Smart Drug

Jesse discussed the uses of Ayahuasca with Dr. Rick Strassman on the SDS episode, Breakthrough Work With "The Spirit Molecule."

Ayahuasca is a DMT (di-methyl-triptamine). DMTs are actually all around us and they're even a naturally occurring psychedelic made in the body! Yes, you read that correctly. DMT is naturally found in small amounts in every living thing.

Ayahuasca can have a negative effect on the body such as nausea and diarrhea, but plants can have an overall positive impact on our consciousness. In fact, Jesse believes that more people should be more open to experimentation. If something can lead to a positive outcome like it can for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) survivors, then it could be worth giving it a shot.

"If you have a condition like PTSD, then almost nothing should be off the table as a potential therapy. There are plenty of success stories with people treating depression, PTSD, and things like that with psychedelic therapies. If you've got a significant problem that you're trying to solve, it seems like it should be one of the things that you certainly can consider. " - Jesse Lawler on using plant medicines and psychedelics to help us heal our minds.

Achieve Mindfulness Through Meditation

One of the easiest ways to naturally get to a different state of consciousness everyday is through the power of meditation.

From beginners to the advanced, there's not just one way to meditate and you can use different apps or pieces of technology like the MUSE Headband.

  • Silent meditation
  • Vipassana
  • Focusing on breathing
  • Listening to be in the present moment

A lot of people tend to go too fast, too quickly with meditation. Meditation won't be very effective for you if rush into doing hours of meditation compared to just a couple of minutes when you're a beginner.

Meditation that helps to quiet the mind can be good for someone who is depressed. It helps to get rid of nagging negative thoughts inside the mind and shut out everything.

"The style of meditation that a person chooses is really going to affect what they're practicing and getting their brain to be better at. So to be aware of what your meditation goal is, you will gravitate towards a certain style."  - Jesse Lawler

When it comes to meditation, there is no one size fits all. Just try different forms of meditation until you come cross the best way for you to become more mindful.

The Connection Between Placebo Effect & Willpower

"You're either an abstainer or a moderator." - Gretchen Rubin on willpower

Can our willpower fatigue with too much use (like a muscle) or is it just something that we're born with?

"Willpower is probably something that does get exhaustive in a person, but I think that something that looks like willpower to an outsider might not actually be willpower to that person. A person can train themselves to avoid Doritos to the point that it takes zero willpower to avoid it now. Willpower's just not an option to that person." - Jesse Lawler

It can be very difficult for some people to control themselves and have the willpower to prevent themselves from eating unhealthy foods.

Both the optimistic and negative mindset on health can impact our willpower. Those with a negative mindset will believe less in their own health and wellness than people who are overly optimistic that something like a smart drug or meditation can help them.

Having an optimistic mindset will help you find something that works for you, but a negative  mindset can hinder your progress to look for something that can help you.

"Optimists tend to be stronger responders to placebos. The Placebo Effect is when we put thoughts into our mind that we do something or there will be a positive outcome. The opposite of a Placebo Effect is a Nocebo Effect in which case things will be bad and get worse. Pessimism might be correlated with the Nocebo Effect." - Jesse Lawler

Jesse's Own N=1 Self Experiment

"One of the greatest advantages of experimentation is just realizing that you can do it. It's a continuous reminder of our power to start changes in our own lives when you're just screwing with something to see if it works in your own life. It's a constant reminder that we're always in flux and flux can't change but at least you can direct it." - Jesse Lawler

An N=1 self experiment is understanding what works for you through a process of elimination or a process of strategic testing. During the experiment you might use self quantifying devices such as wearable trackers, apps, and more that allow for self-optimization.

Josh shared his own N=1 self experiment on last week's episode, Emotional Resilience, Nootropics & Outsmarting the Modern World with Daniel Schmachtenberger

Jesse's N=1 experiment ended up being a total crash and burn for him. He participated in the Uberman Sleep Schedule which meant he had to break up his sleep into 20 minute blocks that were separated by 3.5 hours throughout the day. However, that's way less hours of sleep than what the majority of us need in 24 hours!

The Uberman Sleep Schedule is for people who want to be more productive during the day. The main idea is that you train your brain to drop into REM really quickly, but it's not a restorative way to sleep at all.

Even though Jesse doesn't recommend this intense sleep schedule, he has been using the Oura Ring to keep track of his health. Why a ring instead of a bracelet? It's because the blood vessels are closer to the surface of the skin. Therefore, the ring is supposed to collect more accurate data than a bracelet.

Whatever you may decide to purchase, make sure you invest in something that is:

  • Safe
  • Can help improve your health
  • Usable for long term results
  • Worth the investment

Become your own citizen scientist. It's not about the app, bracelet, tracker etc. or anything you're using as long as it lines up with your main intentions. As a citizen scientist, begin your own N=1 self experiement by having a clear goal that something is going to help you perform better.

She has a BBA in both Marketing and Spanish for Business as well as certificates in Advanced Business Communications and International Business from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire.

Lauren’s wellness journey began at a young age when she joined her local YMCA swim team, The Wave, of La Crosse, WI. One of the most profound views on wellness that anyone has said to her was when she was an assistant swim coach for that same YMCA swim team.

One day during a practice, former head swim coach, Jon Brenner, shared with her that the most important thing about coaching the swimmers was that “It doesn’t matter if they become the best athletes in the world. What’s important is that we give them the tools and guidance they need to live a healthy, active lifestyle for the rest of their lives.”

Since hearing those words, she has taken it to heart to not only focus on continuously living her own healthy lifestyle, but to help others pursue their wellness goals as well.

Lauren’s not only an avid swimmer, but a fan of running, yoga, cooking, and doing any activity outside that involves being surrounded by nature. In the Fall of 2014, she completed a long-awaited goal of walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

According to Lauren, wellness is about finding gratitude and joy in doing any type of physical or self-care activity that we love. Wellness means providing ourselves with self-love, good nutrition, and the inner peace that our individual minds and bodies need.

"We fully believe that optimized human beings lead to a better world. People being productive and creative in whatever it is that is theirs to do. But in many ways, our modern world works against us.” - Daniel Schmachtenberger, Co-Founder of The NeuroHacker Collective

On this special episode of Wellness Force Radio, Daniel shares far beyond how Nootropics like Qualia can provide a comprehensive hardware upgrade for radical cognitive enhancement and emotional resilience, but also how he believes it is creating the building blocks towards a better planet.

You, The N Equals One [2:47]

In a world of mass distractions, responsibilities, cumulative stressors and more notifications than ever in the palms of hands, millions of Americans have long since met their cognitive and emotional capacity.

Cognitive capacity is a nuanced relationship between many variables. Optimizing for one variable of cognitive function at the expense of other critical ones would not give us the result of comprehensive enhancement of human capability. For instance, having drive without the ability to focus well, or willpower without emotional resilience. For that reason, The Neurohacker Collective have designed a formula that deliberately balances subjective effects to give meaningful enhancement in a comprehensive way – a whole system upgrade called Qualia.

If you're here reading, you felt the call towards Qualia. If you're in the contemplation phase or in the process of learning, this is an optimal time for your N=1.

What is N=1?

N-of-1 or single subject clinical trials consider an individual patient as the sole unit of observation in a study investigating the efficacy or side-effect profiles of different interventions. The ultimate goal of an n-of-1 trial is to determine the optimal or best intervention for an individual patient using objective data-driven criteria.

From baseline to Qualia for 4 weeks, here are the 5 steps to start your own personal N:1 experiment in emotional resilience and cognitive performance:

  1. Inspired Action: Order your 30 day supply of Qualia
  2. Baseline: Once your Qualia is received, take a baseline memory, reason, concentration and/or comprehensive cognitive test(s) on either Quantified Mind or Cambridge Brain Sciences and mark the date
  3. Stage 1: Begin stage 1 of Qualia on an empty stomach each morning for 30 days. Download the Qualia Quick Start Guide for full directions on stage 2 and total program here
  4. Journal: Each day for 30 days, journal for 5-7 minutes after your meditation session, or at minimum, during the same time each day.
  5. After 30 days: Congrats, you did it! How do you feel? What did you learn about yourself and Qualia? Now, reassess the same tests again for memory, reason, concentration and/or comprehensive cognitive performance (then email Josh and tell him how you feel!)

Rising Above All The Noise [11:36]

"What could a person of normal intelligence do with their life if they fully dedicated themselves to developing themselves comprehensively for the benefit of humanity?" - Richard Buckminster Fuller

People of all ages seek thier life purpose and calling. Maybe you've been called to a career or a responsibility that you now realize is keeping you from what you feel is really your life calling?

If you're aware your vocation doesn't coincide with who you really are, you have the power change it because it's never too late to start a new path that benefit yourself and others.

Rising above all the noise of modern society that's distracting you starts by creating the space to look inside.

To begin, use meditation or box-breathing to enter a calm mindset in the stillness and ask yourself these questions:

  • What does the future of the world look like?
  • How does this transition look like for everyone? What does it look like for me?
  • If all my financial needs were met, what would I do?
  • What would be the most meaningful thing for me to do?

Answering these questions will raise your awareness above the noise and closer to true alignment with your most authentic self.

"By asking yourself these questions, we're not looking to answer how do we gain or how do we win at life. Rather, we're looking at what problems in the world bother us the most and what interest us."- Daniel Schmachtenberger

About Daniel Schmachtenberger [13:08]

Daniel Schmachtenberger is a social engineer and evolutionary philosopher and strategist. He is the Founder of Critical Path InstituteThe Emergence Project, and The Co-Founder of The Neurohacker Collective. With an early childhood in the Transcendental Meditation community of Fairfield, Iowa, Daniel was homeschooled on the works of Buckminster Fuller, Fritjof Capra, and David Bohm.

After many relocations in childhood, Daniel returned to Fairfield to further math and eastern philosophy studies at Maharishi University, before delving into the work of his adult life. After accumulating comprehensive inventories on behavioral influence, coupled with an already comprehensive literacy of complex systems and whole systems science, he then founded The Emergence Project and began working with a host of luminaries to tackle global scale problems with global scale solutions.

Concurrently, he researched the epistemological frontier of neuroscience, delving deeply into integrative medicine as well as emergent neurotech tools and psychological techniques to optimize solutions on both sides of the mind/brain interface. All of these approaches, within an overarching framework of whole systems problem solving, have resulted in his axiomatic deconstruction of assumed scientific boundaries, and the emergence of a more integrally connected body of knowledge from which to understand scholarship. Daniel is not only a founder at Neurohacker Collective, but moreover a uniquely educated pioneer who is broadening the definition of scientific rigor itself.

What are Nootropics? [19:57]

Nootropic is a chemical that enhances some aspect of our cognitive ability beyond our normal capability without any impactful side affects.

When our brain power and cognitive ability drops below normal baseline, Nootropics help  to support existing and to create new capacities for our brainpower.

Nootropics like Qualia are not "medicine," but they can optimize our capability to overcome when we face different challenges such as brain fog.

The Difference between Nootropics and "Smart Drugs"

A lot of people will take "smart drugs" such as Adderall to help them focus, but Adderall also has a lot of long term side affects such as irritability, anxiety, loss of empathy and ability for digit span.

Adderall can help enhance one aspect, but unlike Nootropics that support systemic enhancement, it won't fully supplement the brain in a comprehensive manner.

Emotional Resilience, Curiosity & Wellness [24:50]

How many times have you felt the pull of distraction today? Maybe caught yourself looking at your phone too much? Did you try to have a conversation with someone, but they were absorbed by their phone?

It is easy to become slaves to emails, notifications, and social media messages. So much so, that the present moment is lost.

When we're practicing emotional resilience however, we can take on deeper personal connections, and our biggest and brightest goals. When we're present, we're naturally curious, which allows us unlimited access to our wellness force: our ability to create a positive vibration in that moment, and in the collective world.

It's the burning curiosity of visionaries like the Co-Founder of The Neurohacker CollectiveDaniel Schmachtenberger, who believes that it is now both possible and necessary for human beings to dramatically upgrade our individual and collective capacities and safeguard the wellbeing of all, and he is on a mission to help build a global alliance of responsible, empowered individuals and like minded groups dedicated to making this vision a reality.

Cognitive Enhancement [28:13]

"We believe that it is now both possible and necessary for human beings to dramatically upgrade our individual and collective capacities and safeguard the well-being of all. Our mission is to help build a global alliance of responsible, empowered individuals and like minded groups dedicated to making this vision a reality." -Daniel Schmachtenberger

At a young age, Daniel realized that he was experiencing brain fog. In order to enhance his thinking, he began to focus on underlying disease structures to find the root of the problem. Unlike some acute diseases that can be cured with one medication, areas of health such as brain fog, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's are more complicated and can have several root causes.

To help end his brain fog, Daniel needed to enhance his brain by providing it with an optimal cognitive bandwidth. So he asked himself, how could a person enhance their own cognitive ability?

To understand the brain's ability and how we can reach cognitive enhancement, Daniel studied the following areas:

  • Cognitive chemistry
  • Nootropics
  • Brain nutrients
  • Neuro chemistry and structure
  • Smart drugs
  • Short term vs. long term memory
  • Verbal fluency and ability
  • Digital spain
  • Focus and concentration
  • Thinking speed
  • Neurotransmitters (dopamine, glutamine)

Get 10x More Done In Life [37:01]

"Increasing the quality of our experience means less subjective suffering and more subjective happiness. That's important because human experience is intrinsically meaningful. By experiencing human capability and the pre-disposition to solve problems, we create things of meaning which also ends up increasing the experience of other people." - Daniel Schmachtenberger

Every single one of us has a hidden meaning or purpose, just waiting to be discovered. But we can't find it if we're distracted by incessant messages, media, or outside noise. We're all either motivated or inspired by numerous factors and in different manners.

Our world view, personal beliefs, economic situation, and even knowing our biology can motivate or direct us towards what we feel called to do.

How we can use this motivation to our advantage? We can biologically optimize our lives with technology and biomarker data.

Using technology and biomarker data, we can improve what we has human beings are capable of doing in this world. Sources such as WellnessFX, 23 And Me, and Ubiome can give us the genetics data we need to help us track our progress while using a nootropic like Qualia to enhance our lives and increase our emotional resilience.

"Qualia is not your golden ticket to everything, but it can support you by enhancing your ability to do things more effectively and grow your capability to make better decisions." -  Daniel Schmachtenberger

How To Increase Our Emotional Presence [46:12]

"There's circuitry in the brain that actually wired us to care for other people and tribes. That's how we would have survived." - Jason Silva of Brain Games

We are meant to be in a tribe. When we're surrounded by people who give us the compassion and support that we need to grow, we all win. But not everyone is born with or capable of being empathetic towards others. How can we create more empathy and compassion?

According to Daniel, humans have "hardware" and "software" that connects us with the "collective" or the rest of the world. Together, all of our physical and social needs are interdependent upon each other.

Daniel gave a great example of how we can take care of ourselves while also being omni-considerate. To begin, think about life would be like without plants. Our bioshphere created both us and plants. Therfore, without plants, we wouldn't have the means to live- no air nor food. The same goes for water and gravity.

We are completely interdependent with the planet and everyone else.

Our Actions Affect Everything [53:23]

With that thought in mind, we can increase our emotional presence by being more present with our actions or what we buy. Every time we make a decision, we can make the best choice by thinking about not only how it will affect ourselves, but everything else in the biosphere as well.

We're a growing population and we need to be emotionally present with how our actions are affecting not only people, but the planet.

See the World Differently

"Practice looking at the world through other people's eyes." - Daniel Schmachtenberger

One of Daniel's favorite ways to increase emotional presence is just to think about looking at the world through the perspective of other people.

  • What other people value
  • What can hurt them
  • Why they are asking for something
  • The reason they feel upset or feel a certain way about something

This way of thinking can help us grow our wellness through better relationships with loved ones and create positive connections with everyone else that we come into contact with.

Emotional Resilience [47:30]

With all of the challenges that we face in this world, it can be emotionally draining at times. At some point we may feel like we've lost our original path to living the life that we want. The life we wanted that gave us purpose.

Nootropics like Qualia can support people in get engaged once again with what they are curious about.

As Daniel discusses during the 2016 event "The Hive Panel: The Future of Humanity and Systems Thinking" he believes that only fully optimized human beings can improve the world.

Jan 10, 2017

There continues to be a stigma and unclear understandings about eat disorders and mental illness. Fortunately, more people are coming forward to discuss why it's so important that we try to understand and help those who are struggling each day.

One of these leaders is 18 year-old University of California, Santa Cruz student and Yoga Teacher, Maris Degener. Maris began her wellness journey as she was recovering from her eating disorder at a hospital. She was given the tools and assistance that she needed to help her body recover from her disorder, but she realized that the medical center didn't provide what she needed to help her mind heal.

Even though she's now a freshman in college, get ready to hear a great deal of insight from Maris on how we can discover self purpose, uncover happiness, and help change the stigma surrounding eating disorders and mental illness.

"They might not be able to understand that what's going through a person's mind doesn't represent the person, but the mental illness." - Maris Degener on why it's important to separate the person from their disorder.

Ending Myths about Mental Illness

"Mental illness as a whole is so difficult to treat because it's so unique to the individual. We're still not 100% certain about how exactly mental illness manifests in people." -  Maris Degener

There are lot a of myths surrounding mental illness and we're still not quite sure what could be the cause of it. For some people it might be genetics or trauma or other life situations they experienced that create enough of an impact to affect their well-being.

There's a false belief that eating disorders come from a place of vanity. However, the root cause is so much deeper than that. Eating disorders and mental illness can come from a person working through their personal life issues. It might be their way to cope with trauma, feeling lost, or as a means to stay grounded when they feel out of control.

Recognize the Signs of an Eating Disorder

Here are some different ways to recognize the signs of an eating disorder.

The person is _____:

  • not finding joy in food.
  • finding it stressful to eat or be around food.
  • suddenly displaying stress during social situations where food is involved.
  • weighing and measuring what they are eating.
  • eating different foods that they didn't eat before.

Shred Other People's Expectations

"Find whatever lights you up when other people are telling you that you should be doing something different with your life." - Maris Degener

Maris made a really great point about the predicted expectations that society has about life and happiness. We can go through these scenarios at different points throughout life, but the pressure can be at its strongest when we have all of this pressure to join extracurricular activities in order to get into college.

For Maris, she was a talented swimmer, but she didn't enjoy the sport or the competition. After recovering from her eating disorder, she began a new journey in which she was more open and honest with herself about what what she loves and what makes her happy.

At first, it was an uncomfortable feeling, but before she knew it, she felt free to follow her passion for yoga.

"I was torn because I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do things because I was passionate about them or was I supposed to do things because it was the right thing to do. So I was struggling with the traditional lack of identity, but I was also playing with this idea of what it meant to be authentic." - Maris Degener on trying to find her purpose during high school

Jan 3, 2017

To celebrate the start of 2017, this episode is dedicated to spotlighting  7 powerful episodes and remembering what they taught us about our wellness path in 2016.

It has been such an incredible year on the Wellness Force Radio podcast! There have been so many amazing guests who have opened up to us to share their stories and teach us how we can improve our health and wellness.

On this episode, you will listen to seven inspiring conversations for seven steps to greater wellness in 2017.

If you’re listening to the Wellness Force Radio podcast for the first time, this will be a unique experience for you to get in touch with the types of guests and topics we dive deep with on the show. If you're a returning listener, this will be an incredible chance for you to absorb seven powerful concepts from these world-class leaders to help you in 2017.

Gretchen Rubin: The Secret to Habit Change

"Unfortunately, we've all learned from tough experience that no magic, one-size-fits-all solution exists and that the real secret to habit change is that in order to change our habits, we must first know ourselves." -  Gretchen Rubin

According to Gretchen, the secret to habit change is to get to know ourselves through self exploration and awareness. We're not all the same and we need to understand what makes us happy and motivated to work hard.

One great example that Gretchen gave was the difference between some one enjoys simplicity vs. abundance. One person may work great in a simple environment with no clutter, but maybe another person feels energized in an office stacked with books and other collections.

Once you've found what helps you stay motivated, you can create new habits to keep that motivation going while respecting other people's differences and what motivates them at the same time.

Melissa Hartwig: Food Freedom Forever

"Food scientists have engineered chemicals and processed foods that light up the reward centers in the brain for a different reason than nature intended. Not because they provide vital nutrition, but because they're scientifically designed to stimulate our taste buds." - Melissa Hartwig

It is said that the gut is our body's second brain because if we pay close attention to it, it can tell us when we're full and what nutrition we need. During this podcast episode, Melissa discussed the difference between Satiation and Satiety and how they can help us create healthy habits.

What is Satiation?

Satiation is your brain's perception that you've had enough food and you're done eating. Satiation basically occurs when you're sick of eating. Maybe your mouth is tired from chewing food, you're sick of the taste of the food that you're eating, or you're so full that you can't even eat anything else.

Satiation can easily happen when you've eaten foods such as popcorn, brownies, chocolate or any food that's difficult to stop eating once you've started. For me, it's super hard to stop eating chips with salsa and/or guacamole.

What is Satiety?

Satiety takes place in the stomach when the body knows that it has enough various nutrients to be full and satisfied as far as survival goes. When you eat a grass-fed steak with green vegetables and perhaps some healthy fats, your body has had enough without you needing to over consume other foods.

How can we begin to focus on eating more foods that help us feel satiety?

Focus on consuming foods that nature intended for us to eat. Stay away from overly processed foods with lots of preservatives and sugars and eat natural fruits, vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats. Focus on eating satiety foods so that you get to a place where you can trust the signals that your gut, not your brain, is telling you.

Dr. Jade Teta: The 5 Metabolic Myths

"Metabolism is designed to keep us in homeostasis and help us adapt to the stresses of the world around us whether that stress is sleep deprivation, decreased calories, over exercising, or emotional stress." - Dr. Jade Teta

During the episode with Dr. Jade Teta, he explained what the difference is between Dieters and Detectives.

Dieters go by the rules, but unfortunately, this is what keeps them stuck in the same place or worse as they move form one diet to the next. Dieters follow all of these rules, but there actually aren't any rules at all, just guidelines. That's where the Detectives come in.

Detectives follow the guidelines and learn skills that allow them to be flexible and discover their own nutrition method. Why is this better than following a strict set of rules of what to eat and not eat? Because every person is different and we all have different metabolism.

The Goldilock Zone

According to Dr. Teta, the key to finding the right metabolism balance and the perfect amount of nutrition, exercise, and relaxation is to follow the Golidlock Zone method.

You can get in the Goldilock zone when you have not too much, not too little, but just the right amount of:

  • Fats
  • Carbs
  • Proteins
  • Stress
  • Exercise

When everything is balanced, your metabolism is right where you want it to be. Just like metabolism, everyone's Goldilock Zone will be unique. To help you get to the Goldilock Zone, focus on HEC.

What is HEC?

HEC stands for Hunger, Energy, and Cravings. HEC helps you to understand if a diet is working for you. After each meal, pay attention to how your body feels, responds, and what your biomarkers are telling you.

"If your HEC is in check, then your metabolism is balanced."- Dr. Jade Teta

Dr. John Gray - ADHD, Brain Health, & Sex Addiction

"We demand the instant gratification that releases the dopamine in our brain when we're hyper stimulated.  Instead of over simulating our brains, need to bring it back it back to the present moment. We need to be happy with what's here rather than creating drama or addiction." - Dr. John Gray

Our society is always looking for the best, new thing out there. The best TV screens, the best food, the most romantic relationships etc. But our brain can also thrive on sadness, stress, and addiction

All of these factors and more can give us instant gratification because they release high levels of dopamine in our brains. Once we've experienced this natural stimulation, we keep wanting more or we'll easily get bored.

However, if too much dopamine is released into the brain, the body regulates itself and ends up lowering the amount of dopamine sensors. The higher the stimulation, the longer it takes for the sensors to return to normal.

Recover from Hyper Stimulation

Not only will time help heal the body from hyper stimulation and high dopamine levels, but a healthy nutrition is key to helping the body recover back to normal.

Rather than being bored with what we have and ready to move one, we need to learn to be happy and appreciate what we have in our lives. Looking out for and buying the latest TV will only give you instant gratification; it cannot bring you pure joy and happiness in your life.

Nutrition is key, but so are minerals such as lithium. With just the right amount of lithium and another alkalizing minerals such as potassium and calcium, they can help lower our amount of stress. However, too much lithium can create high levels of anxiety.

Gay & Katie Hendricks - Love vs. Fear:Body Intelligence in a Modern World

"Love will triumph because love is bigger than fear. You can test that out in your own being by noticing what happens when you love your fear. Suddenly a whole new world opens up." - Gay Hendricks

For some people, self-love is something that can be difficult to find and tap into. However, if we don't love or honor ourselves, then we cannot honestly begin to trust and get to know ourselves.

"I saw that down at the bottom of everything, you're either in love or in fear at any given moment. That you're either open to cherishing yourself, cherishing other people, the universe around you, you're opening to listening, you're opening to being present OR you're scared about something and that shuts you down." - Gay Hendricks

To better understand ourselves, Gay suggests that we think about something that we're afraid of. We need to discover that fear, feel it, and love it. Love that fear just like you love a person and with all of that positive emotion, you can use that love as a means to start loving yourself just the way you are.

Drew Canole - Self-Love, Juicing, and Transformation

"A lot of people are trying to find what they're purpose is. When you clear your space and put yourself in a place where you can just start listeneing more, your purpose is going to show up. It's that thing that's always more or less been there, but you don't think is possible." - Drew Canole

The people that we spend the most time with can say a lot about who we are and what we want out of life. During Drew's interview with Josh, he explained how Tribe Affects Our Vibe

Each year, Drew takes time to get a clear picture of himself. What he loves about himself, but also what he dislikes and disapproves. Do the same for yourself and then think about people who you think are the same or have similar personal growth development goals.

You create your tribe by finding and connecting with people who have the same vibe going on. People who share similar characteristics. If you are or want to be a certain way, you'll bring similar people into your life.

Transforming Your Life By Finding Your WHY

Drew also spoke about the Whydentity Process and discovering a why that makes us cry. This is the moment when we identify with the identity that we have in mind with who we are.

Your why is your joy or reason as to why you like something. If we can find joy in something that we're doing, we can create something amazing. In the moment that you find your why, you will omit self-love, happiness, and success. So much so that it rubs off on other people and they will feel passionate about something that they love too.

Mark Divine: Creating the Unbeatable Mind

"The Warrior Master is someone who is extremely humble. It is someone who is extremely emotionally grounded and has cultivated a love for his teammates that is uncommon and also has a love for his enemies. They realize that everyone has the same essence. It's just what's layered on top that makes us different." - Mark Divine

We learned something important about the power of love and respecting other people when Mark Divine spoke on the podcast.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to open our hearts to other people. Especially if we've experienced trauma such as PTSD, it's not easy to open up after feeling shut down for so long. But if there's two things that Mark learned during his 20 years as a Marine, it's that a warrior is committed to two things: Self Mastery and Service.

However, we can't serve if we don't work on ourselves and many people do not have the training and methodology to work towards mastery. Mastery is just as important as sleeping, eating, and simply being. To reach self mastery and service, we need to grow emotionally so that our intuition can develop and our hearts become softer.

Loving Our Enemies

The Master Warrior loves their enemies and recognizes that we are all humans with the same essence. We all have a being. Not only do we love our enemies, but we respect them and that is also a form of love. In returner, the love and respect we have for our enemies will help us grow stronger.

Dec 27, 2016

When working on our wellness goals, it's easy to forget we all have both an inner coach and an critic inside our mind. The inner coach encourages us to do our best, while the critic can shut us down- dissolving our state of flow.

"There's a voice inside of all of us that tells us to accomplish what we desire and never quit. This is our inner coach. This is a voice that tells us to believe in ourselves." - Jeff Grant

Fortunately, we have the power to bring out the best inner coaches within us and soften our harshest inner critics.

On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, coach, mentor, writer, and ultra-endurance athlete, Jeff Grant of Hillseeker,  shares several hacks on how we can tap into our mind and emotions to become better athletes and more productive.

Our emotions can easily distract us, but with the right mind tools, we can learn to use those emotions to our advantage.

Owning Your State of Flow

"In positive psychology, flow is the mental state of operation in which a person who is performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment during the process of the activity.” - Jeff Grant

Being in the mental state of flow means that we are both amazed and inspired to be our your best. It's the natural high we feel when we're on a mission or have completed a goal such as completing a great work out, finishing a race, or finalizing a project at work.

Experiencing a state of flow means that we are present in the moment.

It can be difficult to get into a state of flow, but there are several tools that we can use to help cultivate more flow into our lives. Once we understand what helps us get into the state of flow, we can jump right into it when we want or need it in our lives.

When Jeff finds flow during a run or through music, he tries to transfer it to another part of his life or within his work as a coach and author.

The Four Stages of Flow

To find flow and stay within it, there are four steps: Struggle, Release, Flow, Recover.

1) Struggle

To begin our state of flow, we need to struggle on purpose. We can do this by taking ourselves out of our comfort zone and placing ourselves in an unfamiliar place, situation, or thought.

Once we have struggled, we can release.

2) Release

We can release ourselves from our struggle by finding something to laugh at or something that distracts us from it.

3) Flow

This state of release places us in a state of natural flow and euphoria. When we're in the state of flow, we can find immense happiness and feel like anything is possible to achieve.

4) Recovery

Once we're in the state of flow, we never want to let go of it again. We think that we always need to have this euphoric sensation 24/7, but recovery is part of the process as well. Recovery is important because it allows us to connect each cycle of flow.

A lot of us are looking for our next great achievement: a place on the podium, a best time, or a new goal accomplished. But if we're just focusing on pushing ourselves to our limits with new goals, we might push ourselves too far, too fast.

By focusing on recovering, we're give ourselves permission to take time off and not push ourselves to do more than we can handle.

With goals and technology, we focus so much on the quantitative numbers that we forget that qualitative facts are just as important to our health and wellness.

Flow isn't just applied to athletic performance, but to life performance and job performance as well. The 4 Stages of Flow can truly be applied to anything that we want.

Discover Your Best Inner Coach

To start discovering and using your inner coach to your advantage, think of the coaches or teachers that were or are still part of your life today. They most likely all have different voices and different teaching methods from giving cues and instructions to building confidence or being aggressive with a military manner.

What did coaches or teachers do in the past do to help you? What were their voices like in different scenarios?

If you can identify the inner coach voices in your mind, then you can learn how to build the best inner coach to help you stay focused and accomplish your goals.

So, how do we begin to tap into that inner coach voice? Think again about different coaches and their styles of coaching. On this episode, Jeff shares 5 different coaching styles:

  1. Bouncer
  2. Teacher
  3. Guide
  4. Muse
  5. Motivator

What's the Purpose of the Bouncer and Muse Coaches?

"The inner critic loves it when we worry about what other people think. It loves it when we highlight our fears. It has a strong dislike of the flow state." -Jeff Grant

The inner bouncer coach tells our inner critic to be quiet. Visualize a bouncer at a club who doesn't let others inside and acts as a bodyguard.

Disarm your inner critic by giving your inner bouncer coach one new thought to help redirect your thinking.

Our inner muse coach is the voice that reminds us to play and be creative. Jeff likes to tap into his inner muse by leaving the running trail and taking a different path. When he's listening to his muse coach, he may skip and jump around or go down on a slide at a playground.

When we're so focused on quantitative results, sometimes we need to take a break and just play during our workouts to get into our state of flow.

Playing can help snap us out of our stressful thoughts and help us experience a new state of flow.

Put Your Inner Coach to Use

You can practice listening to your inner coach by practicing meditation. Focus on what the voices sound like and pay attention to how they motivate you.

As you meditate, concentrate on what your inner coach is telling you to do. Be sure to take your time and listen to each of the 5 inner coaches to create the perfect one. You may need a different inner coach for different moments and situations.

Tap Into Your Performance With Emotions

What emotions do you experience during a race or workout? Do you ever feel anger, joy, love, jealousy?

We can face many emotions while we're exercising, but we don't tend to intentionally put ourselves into a state of emotion to see what positive and negative results may happen.

Jeff likes to put emotions to the test by having his students focus on different emotions during a workout to discover what impact they have on them. With amazing results, Jeff discovered that different emotions can either improve or hinder our performance.

By purposely tapping into emotions during a run, we can become aware of which ones serve us better.

"All you have is what's going on in front of you right now. Worrying about the future is only going to cause anxiety and bring up fears. It's only going to cause you to live in a time that's not present." - Justin Stenstrom

Our past may haunt us and our future may scare us, but we must remember that what we have today is the present. When we focus on being in the present and what is happening now, we can move beyond our anxiety.

Having once spent years fight depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, Justin Stenstrom is now a nationally acclaimed life coach, author, entrepreneur, and speaker. On this week's episode, Justin opens up and shares his experience about how he ended his panic attacks in order to grow to the person that he is today.

Give yourself the self-care and love that you deserve by learning about how you can beat your own anxiety, build confidence, and harness the power of small wins.

Beat Your Own Anxiety in 3 Steps

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” -  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Even though Justin suffered panic attacks for years, he realized that they were truly a gift to help motivate himself to grow and become the person that he is today.

Determined to find a solution to end his panic attacks and irrational thinking, Justin was able to beat his own anxiety in 3 simple steps by completely shifting his mindset and the way he viewed his panic attacks.

1) Observe your thoughts and emotions

When you first feel a panic attack coming on, it's natural to want to run away from it. However, struggling with your anxiety will just make it worse for you. Rather than fighting back, simply do nothing and just observe what is happening in your mind and with your emotions.

2) Welcome the panic attack

The next step is to let the panic in and have a dialogue with it in your head. Freely welcome these thoughts of anxiety and any other thoughts and emotions.

3) Call out your anxiety and fears

Call them out and ask for more. Expose all your fears, anxiety, and concerns to come out into the open. This empowering, counter-intuitive step will help your negative thoughts, feelings, and sensations go away.

The Right Nutrition to Calm Your Mind

Calming our minds can begin my focusing on our own nutrition. Justin recommends following a healthy diet and taking supplements as needed. For example, his daily food intake often includes:

  • Fish
  • Fish oil
  • Fruit
    • Apples, Bananas
  • Complex carbs
    • Broccoli, Kale
  • Protein
    • Chicken, lean steak
  • Suggested supplements
    • Magnesium, Niacin, Niacinamide, B complex, ashwagandha, valieran root

Build Confidence & Challenge Yourself

"Do one thing each day that scares you." - Eleanor Roosevelt

We are all born with confidence, we might just not realize it depending on the environment that we are in situated in.

When we're in a comfortable environment, it's easy to be ourselves. When we're in an unfamiliar territory, it can be terrify and we feel closed to those that are around us.

You don't have to gain confidence overnight. Build yourself up overtime with little winds. In a social situation, you can start small by saying "hi" to people that you see during a walk or start up small conversations with others-your mailman, cashier, etc.

Keep track of your progress and create new challenges for yourself each week. Before you know it, all of these little winds will build up into one big wind and you will feel confident to talk to anyone.

Embrace New Situations

To help Justin get over his social fears and anxiety, he built up his self-esteem by attending a dance class with all females. It was terrify and he was always anxious before the class.

However, by the end of the class, he felt more empowered than ever before. Why? Because by getting out of his comfort zone, he was able to experience a scary situation and realize that it actually was not as bad as he thought it was.

Putting yourself in different situations can help you realize that anything is possible and there's really nothing to fear.

Tap Into Your Subconsciousness with Self Hypnosis

One way to get over fears and phobias is to use self-hypnosis and tap into the subconscious mind. This technique helps to train your mind to replace negative thoughts and emotions with positive emotions.

Some Hypnotherapists that Justin knows and recommends include:

"Faith is like a muscle. It's similar to going out for a run- if you don't do it normally run, you're going to sweat and it's not going to be comfortable. If you step into having faith when you don't know what the end is going to be, then that's something you can build every single day and you can rely on it." - Bridgette Mayer

This show is for everyone who believes that their past determines their future.

How did a young girl who came through the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DYFS) system and foster care end up in the art world with a multi-million dollar gallery and consulting business? Through the kindness of strangers, fierce determination, and a survivor’s sheer will, Bridgette Mayer’s is a success story for the ages. In her inspirational memoir of gross neglect, violent abuse, and ultimately redemption, she shares her journey from the projects of Jersey City to eventually becoming one of Philadelphia’s most celebrated gallery owners.

By following her heart and passion for art, Mayer’s interests evolved from a means of escape into her salvation and her security. She used her inherent self-assurance, natural curiosity, and scrapper work ethic to overcome the damage inflicted on her as a child and create a harmonious, rewarding, and charitable life — for herself and the artists she represents.

Rising Above Your Circumstances

"Anger is a much more proactive emotion than despair. I've used anger and fear to propel me forward. I've learned how to use both pretty well at this point. I've used such experiences to make me a better." - Bridgette Mayer

Bridgette's memoir, The Art Cure : A Memoir of Abuse & Fortune (published by Little Lion press in September 2016), is for anyone who aspires to a career in the arts and who has been told it’s too difficult or impractical to pursue. With bravery and tenacity, anyone can achieve the life of their dreams, no matter how out of reach it may seem. Mayer offers readers a bridge to color and a lifeline of hope for the future.

After suffering an abusive childhood that landed her in foster care homes and on the streets, starving and beat up, Bridgette was adopted by a wonderful family at the age of nine and began her life transformation.

Her early and challenging experiences gave her a tenacity of spirit, unbreakable creativity and a desire to make her mark in the art world. Now a successful art dealer, curator, art adviser, author and entrepreneur, Bridgette Mayer has spent decades cultivating her passion for art, artists, the clients she advises and finding her way to the top of the art world.

Creating The New Story

"I had a moment of frustration and I said to myself, 'The next 10 things that I'm asked to do, I'm just going to say 'yes' to them and figure it out.' The next day, I got a call from CNN to be on Anderson Cooper's show, 'On the Rise.' " - Bridgette Mayer

Bridgette's background of struggle and overcoming obstacles lead to her current success and spurred her to write, “The Art Cure: A Memoir of Abuse & Fortune.”

Her passion for artists and managing them to the highest level as well as working with top collectors from around the world has guided her business the past seventeen years. Bridgette's expertise encompasses a whole approach to art collecting, creating authentic environments both public and private with art.

Her mission is to continue to inspire those around her and especially artists, women and entrepreneurs to live the life they dream even in the face of insurmountable obstacles.

Bridgette Mayer Gallery

The Bridgette Mayer Gallery has been featured on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 as a small business “On The Rise” and was recognized as a recommended Philadelphia arts destination in The New York Times Magazine. In 2013, Mayer was named one of the top 500 Galleries in the world by Boulin ArtInfo, and was also featured in the Tory Burch Foundation’s “Women To Watch” series.

Mayer has been a featured speaker on many panels in the Philadelphia area and has guest lectured at a number of Universities, where her talks focus on how emerging artists can promote their work and sustain a career in the arts.  A graduate of Bucknell University, Mayer was an active member of the University’s Arts Board for several years.  She is currently a board member of the Arts & Business Council, Philadelphia, PA & Vox Vopuli, Philadelphia, PA.

About Bridgette Mayer

For the past sixteen years Bridgette Mayer has been running a top contemporary art gallery in Philadelphia and helping her clients and the artists she serves improve the quality of their life through art. Growing up in an abusive home in the projects of Jersey City and filtered through the foster care system until she was nine years old, Bridgette was finally adopted by a wonderful family. If you had seen the conditions she grew up in, you would not even believe it that someone could come from there and get to where she is now.

Bridgette mayer the art cure rising above your circumstances wellness force radio

She had to learn how to read and get started living a life that was no longer centered around the drugs, alcohol and physical abuse. Over the years she has come through many challenges and worked for her dream of being a top arts professional in the gallery industry. For her entire life, Bridgette had big dreams, and has dreamed the dreams that others said would not be possible.

Bridgette is living proof and this is not a Hollywood movie. She literally came from the other side of the tracks and built a life of abundance for herself.

From Bridgette:

"That is why I wanted to write a book to share my story with you. Part memoir and part how I got my start in the art world, this book is for anybody who might need inspiration or might want to know how somebody like myself who came from nothing, was able to build a multi-million dollar business in the art world. You see, It is possible. I hope you will share my journey and see what is possible for you!"

"Knowing without doing is the same thing as not knowing. What matters is if the knowledge that you have will give you an effective health practice for the long term." - Dan Pardi

There is power in knowledge and with the right health and wellness information, we can make the right decisions in accordance with our own needs.

This week, entrepreneur, researcher, and developer of Loop Model to Sustain Health Behaviors, Dan Pardi, explains Self Determination Theory and motivation, the human connection, and his latest project, humanOS to help us find the best health information.

Find The Health You're Looking For

"You have more control over your health than anyone else." -  Dan Pardi

There are many sources out there that claim that they have the answer to all of your health problems, but they truly don't. These novelty, quick fix methods, products, and services may look appealing, but they aren't sustainable for long-term health results.

To find the best help for your health needs, you first have to clarify your own health problems. Rather than trend hopping by focusing on what you just read in the latest health magazine about a new diet, research and find out for yourself what your body needs.

It can be so confusing with so much information out there in books, magazines, and the internet. However, sources like humansOS, that Dan and his team are putting together, help us find the best, most credible sources of information.

Truth vs. Fiction For Health Research

In a recent interview on humanOS radio with Dr. David Katz of Yale, Dan mentioned:

“As well-intentioned as someone might be, I frequently find myself getting  frustrated, not when somebody’s passionate and wrong about an issue,  but when people can be overly confident and dismissive of  mainstream medicine’s consensus in favor of their own opinion which can often associate with their own financial reward.”

Once you have a proper perspective and mindset, you make good decisions for yourself. It's better late than never to embrace your responsibility to find the best method and motivation for you stay true to yourself and progress your health journey.

One challenge we all face today is the fight against the modern lifestyle. We used to be hunters and gathers, but today we're consuming high processed foods and sitting around too much at home.

An unhealthy lifestyle doesn't only lead to chronic disease, but can impair our daily performance and relationships as well.

All the technology in the world won't help you, but you can use the power of technology to fight back against misinformed studies to do your own research.

Begin Your Own Research

To ensure that you are finding the best information out there, look closely at who this researcher is and what their study is all about.

  • Who are they associated with?
  • Do they declare their method?
  • Do they offer a too good to be true solution?

If this source appears to provide a quick fix, be careful.

OR

  • Do they have a realistic perspective?
  • Does their method clearly explain how it will help?
  • Is their research comprehensive?
  • Does their campaign have an overall, large framework.

Once you've found a legitimate piece of information on health, how can you incorporate it into your daily life?

  1. Try to clarify the problem that you're trying to solve.
  2. Find the right ideas that can help you.
  3. Understand those ideas deeply.
  4. Turn those into health and wellness skills.
  5. Maintain those health skills for life with good information.

Human Motivation

"Our job isn’t to motivate other people, it’s about creating the condition in which people can motivate themselves.” - Dan Pardi

Self Determination Theory - (SDT) is a theory of motivation. It is concerned with supporting our natural or intrinsic tendencies to behave in effective and healthy ways. SDT has been researched and practiced by a network of researchers around the world. The theory aims to understand motivation by looking at the core categories of human needs:
  1. Physical, which is things like thirst, and hunger, and sex.
  2. Psychological, which is the desire to be competent in anything but particularly things that are important.
  3. Autonomy, which speaks to the notion that we like to have freedom to determine our own path.
  4. Social needs, which is the sense of belonging to a group, recognition from others, and even the sense of power in your own life.

Controlled vs Autonomous Motivation

SDT is a behavior model that tries to understand what human motivation is. Motivation has many different categories that can be placed into two different groups: Controlled Motivation and Autonomous Motivation.

Controlled Motivation

Controlled motivation is caused by external rewards such as a prize for accomplishing a goal. But you can also be punished by having something taken away from you if you don't complete the goal or feel guilty for not accomplishing it.

Autonomous Motivation

Autonomous motivation is when a person is compelled to do something because the activity takes on some personal importance or it becomes a part of the person's belief system and it even becomes part of the person's identity.

Your not motivated by external rewards, but you do something because it's a part of your identity and who you are as a person.

Dan gave a great example that someone who has controlled motivation runs for the physical reward. However, a person who has autonomous motivation will run in the rain despite all rational thinking because exercise no matter what is part of who they are.

Using humanOS to Your Advantage

As a mission, humanOS helps people master their health.
Understanding that this is necessary is actually critical to one's success of long-term help.

Why?

Because all the technology in the world won't be healthy for you. The technology can't just be available, you have to pick it up and use it and you have to use it the right way. HumanOS helps you benefit from the worlds best health technology and health information.

How did you make humanOS so clear and easy to use?

  • Explain why something is really worth your attention compared to something you shouldn't really pay attention to.
  • Some untested therapies claim to have the ultimate answer for everything, but they're not validated.
  • Having mindfulness or awareness about health can put you in a better position.
  • If more people are aware of their own health and what works and what doesn't, we'll become a healthier community overall.

Listen As Dan Uncovers

  • Why clarifying the exact health problem is missed by more than half of people seeking change
  • Novelty seeking vs. taking a deeper dive into what you know to be helpful
  • How do we get to the deeper understanding to creating skills for sustainable change
  • How to not get lost in the research and data for your health
  • Why Dan became frustrated by the ocean of misleading health information online and decided to do the academic work to create a trusted source based on science: humanOS.
  • Understanding the human behavior model

"How you perceive, interrupt, and how you experience reality is unique to you like your thumb print. That neurologically you are an endangered species." - Bonnie Kelly

Today, certified life coach & personal development expert, Bonnie Kelly, tells her story have how she overcame an astonishing amount of hurt and betrayal to become the strong woman, coach, speaker, and author on a mission to help 100 million people end needless suffering.

In just one year, we've listened to so many incredible stories about how powerful the subconscious mind is, and today we have a powerful one that sits atop the collective.

One way to Bonnie was able to let go of her past to move on with a new life was by reprogramming negative thoughts to create a new, truthful story and forgiving her past.

Our Subconscious Software

"Feelings are the guards that stand watch over the belief ensuring it will not escape. For many of us, childhood felt more like an episode of Survivor than Leave it to Beaver." - Bonnie Kelly

Our brain is similar to a computer. We have a monitor that connects to the tower to transmit all of the necessary information to function and learn. Inside the computer, we have software that stores and saves all of our memories in the history file.

Our software is our subconscious mind which controls all of our thinking and can also create either positive, true thoughts or negative, false thoughts in our mind as far as:

  • Who we think we are
  • How we show up in the world
  • How we fit in the world

Negative Core Beliefs

Throughout life, we collect negative experiences and traumas. Even as children, any unintentional hardship that we experience becomes  part of our negative core beliefs.

These experiences are like viruses being installed in our brains. We end up accepting harmful events and remember them in our subconscious. Once these negative thoughts become part of our every day thinking, it's hard to change them.

If we don't challenge our negative core beliefs, they become part of who we are and we tell ourselves false ideas such as:

  • We're not lovable.
  • We don't matter.
  • We're not good enough.

Stop The Cycle of Negative Thinking

We attract ourselves to feelings or environments that are familiar to us. Because of this, we always we end up in experiences at re-validate any negative thoughts that we have about ourselves.

Bonnie experienced a constant cycle of  bad relationships because that was what she was drawn to. Her negative core belief that she is not lovable attracted her to people and situations and confirmed that thought.

She's realized that if we don't recognize the continuous cycle of negative thinking, we will continue to believe that our NCB's are true.

We have to realize that this is how the brain is working against us.

If we disconnect ourselves from the negative thinking and stop reinforcing a new habit from a previous negative thought for 3 days, we can change ourselves emotionally. New, positive connections can reshape you into a new form of being.

Put into daily practice, this can help us get out of long-term depression. However, if we reinforce the negative thoughts again, then we go back to our old way of thinking.

Learning to Forgive and Let Go

"Forgiveness isn't about the other person. It's about us. It's about letting go of the things that have happened because forgiveness is a gift you give to yourself."-Tony Robbins

It takes a tremendous effort to discover the root cause of our subconscious. Once we've discovered it, we need to focus on changing it through techniques on a regular basis. One method that Bonnie suggests is to practice forgiveness and retell your true story.

Not Your Fault, But Your Responsibility

The first stop on the process of healing the negative subconscious mind is to realize that things that have happened to you were not your fault and you were the victim.

The words that people have said to you or the actions they have done were not your fault. Therefore these experiences that have created NCB in your mind don't actually have any true meaning that validates the person that you are.

The things that have happened to you are not your fault and you became the victim. By giving that story power, your giving away your freedom.

Forgiveness takes time and strength, but it will be your gateway of letting go of any wrongdoing that has been done to you. Forgiving others will help you transform you story and rewrite it so that you feel empowered once again and find your true core.

Forgiveness is a practice and a choice that you have to do over and over to heal.

Unwilling to forgive will consume you and keep you stuck with all of your feelings of anger and resentment towards others and what has happened to you.

No one is gong to save you and you have to become your own hero.

When it comes to personal health, one size does NOT fit all.

We are all unique in terms of our preferences, genetics, life experiences. Therefore, what works for one person may not work for us.

The same can be said about a relationship between a personal coach and a client. Just because one approach worked with one client doesn't mean that it will work with another client.

What does it take to a create a positive relationship between a personal coach and client? How can a personal coach connect with a client in such a way that it will change their life forever?

ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and Precision Nutrition Coach, Lisa Perkins, of Primal Transformations shares her 5 tips for changing your life around and discovering the perfect health plan for you.

The Power of Connection in The Coaching Relationship

"We can't look at quantitative biomarker data without looking at the emotional components."-Lisa Perkins

During her journey to become a personal coach, Lisa discovered the power of emotional intelligence and connection with other people. She realized that there is so much more to health than food or exercise.

A good coach looks at the whole person.  Nutrition, exercise, and sleep all matter but they are just part of the story.

One-size-fits-all plans don’t allow wiggle room for things like work deadlines, the stress of caring for family members, or internal struggles with self-esteem.  They also don’t provide support to help clients consistently implement their plan.

Lack of customization and lack of support often prevent people from being successful.  Good coaches know this.  They work with clients to develop an enjoyable process that leads to long-term, sustainable results.

A person needs to set a health goal that connects their deepest values.

Lisa has witnessed the struggle of many clients dealing with a story of yo-yo dieting, restrictive eating, and plan hopping. They weren't told how important it is to lock in your "big why."

According to Lisa, you have to determine how you want to FEEL when you achieve your goal.  If you’re trying to conform to how you think society wants you to look, that’s not a positive motivator.

Instead, ask yourself, ‘How do I want to show up in the world?’

Strong?

Radiantly healthy?

Energetic?

Capable of doing whatever I want to do?

These are the powerful emotions that will help us keep our eyes focused on our unique goal

Finding the Perfect Coach for You

Find a coach who you can connect with and is willing to collaborate on a customized plan.

Take the time to interview several coaches.  This is a personal relationship and it’s vital that you feel comfortable opening up with them.

Don’t settle for the first coach you talk to or the least expensive coach.

Remember:  You are worth the journey to reclaim your health and mojo.  Take the time to find a good coach and see for yourself how big an impact this has on your health, fitness, and life.

Your Approach Predicts Your Progress

"When we're constantly judging ourselves, nothing will happen. When we talk with other people that we trust, we can see things in a new light. We're all struggling with the same things, but we're not talking about them." - Lisa Perkins

The diet industry only focuses on short term result plans, but these often end in us reverting back to old habits. If we're going to do the work, we want the results that we get to keep!

This requires us to slow down a bit, figure out our key roadblocks, and do the work to get out of our own way.

This doesn't seem very sexy until you discover how amazing life can be without the diet/shame roller coaster.

Just like Goldilocks, you need a plan that is 'just right' for you.

If what you're currently doing isn't working for you, it's not a moral failure. It simply isn't the approach that works for you! This doesn't mean you start judging yourself.

Instead, you need to get curious! For example:

You're hungry at 10AM. Ask, 'Did I get enough of the right food for breakfast? What could I change tomorrow?'.

You like to graze in the evening.  Ask:  ‘Did I eat enough protein, carbs, fiber, and healthy fat at dinner?’  OR ‘Am I craving snacks out of habit/feel disconnected from others/feel bitter about going to a job I detest tomorrow?’

You simply can’t make yourself go to the gym.  Ask:  ‘Where can I find a bodyweight exercise routine that I can do at home that makes me feel good and doesn’t make me feel punished?’.  (Hint:  YouTube is full of them!)

These are examples of how getting curious, as opposed to judging yourself for ‘failing’ on someone else’s plan, allows you to customize a nutrition and fitness plan fits your preferences, goals, and lifestyle.

Become the Expert on You vs Following Gurus

We have the power to take our health into our own hands but, sadly, we often forget this.

Lisa often reminds her clients that they were in the driver’s seat of their own life the entire time, they were simply napping at the wheel!

Life is short.  We mustn’t settle.  If your ‘normal’ is tired, unexcited, and feeling frumpy, it’s time to wake up.  We all deserve better than this. The great news?  It’s not that hard to get it!

We tend to over-complicate this ‘getting healthy’ business.

It’s pretty simple:  What could you do in the next hour that would make you feel more vibrant?

Could you go for a walk instead of eating that free (not!) break room doughnut?  Could you call a friend instead of going on social media?

These small actions don’t seem like much but when you put them together, you’ve got a beautiful thing called momentum.

Lisa recommends 3 steps to begin your own health journey:

  • 1) Eat real food most of the time
    • Paleo is a simple approach and a good baseline to just start eating simple, nutrient dense food.
  • 2)Become aware of your body's signals
    • Ask yourself, "Am I physically hungry?"
    • When you're aware of your body's signals, you develop self awareness.
  • 3) Prepared with healthy food
    • Taking the time to have healthy food prepared and ready to go is key. We want to make the healthiest option the most convenient option.
    • High quality protein (organic, pastured, grass fed, wild caught), a wide variety  of organic veggies, and a moderate amount of healthy fat (olive oil, coconut oil, grass fed butter, avocado) is key to good energy, feeling satisfied, and developing a fit physique.

There IS NO wagon

According to Lisa, the wagon mentality was invented by the diet industry to make us feel like we can't figure things out for ourselves. Unfortunately, this approach is toxic for our self-esteem. It prevents us from building trust with our own hunger/fullness signales and it makes us feel out of control.

A better approach is to determine what represents an improvement for you at each meal.  Start there.  Learn to get on the same team with your body.  You wouldn’t feed your kids a sleeve of cookies for dinner because that wouldn’t be taking good care of them.  Give yourself the same grace. You deserve to take impeccable care of yourself.

Ditch the wagon and adopt the ‘I take impeccable care of myself’ approach.  Not only is this more enjoyable, the result is a body and life you love.

Secret Sauce...Start Living Now!

How do you think your life will be different when you’ve lost weight or improved your health?  What activities, career moves, or social engagements are you putting off?

Start doing these things now.

Why? Lisa gives two reasons:

1) You are more than worthy right now to show up, say yes to friends, take the trip, wear the bikini, go for the promotion, or whatever else you’re putting off until you’ve lost (insert number) pounds. Does anyone care what J.K. Rowling or Angela Merkel weighs? It’s ridiculous when you stop and think about it.   Start living now.

2) You’re much more likely to achieve your health and fitness goals if you’re excited about something else in your life.  Too often, we use food as entertainment or as a way to fill the void. Let’s fill the void with what we’re actually craving which is very often a sense of purpose, joy, and meaningful social connection.

"Our dietary choices play a major role in determining whether we are going to live into our 80s and 90s and even beyond with a good, functioning brain, or like 50% of people who live to be age 85, we will experience brain decline in the form of Alzheimer's which is a preventable disease."- Dr. David Perlmutter

When we think about brain health, we don't think that our gut has anything to do with it. However, the fact is that the gut has everything to do with how our brains function as we grow older.

Neurologist and New York Times Best Selling Author, Dr. David Perlmutter has witnessed the damaging effects that a poor diet can have on our brains. Today is perfect timing with the launch of his new book, The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan, as he shares why we are vulnerable to develop brain degenerative disease and how we can take matters into our own hands in order to live long, healthy lives with a bright mind that is free of illness.

Make the Choice to Have a Healthy Brain

Even if a relative of yours was diagnosed with a brain degenerative disease such as Alzheimer's, you have the amazing opportunity to make lifestyle choices to ensure your brain's health.

Factors such as sleep, nutrition, stress levels, and exercise can impact your health, but you can also take advantage of them to improve your wellness and lower the chances of brain decline.

Connecting Wellness And Gut Health

"It's a bit humbling to recognize that mood is regulated by our gut. Not only through the process of controlling inflammation, which is a cornerstone player in depression, but that around 90% of our levels of dopamine and serotonin are not manufactured in the brain. They're mostly manufactured in the gut." - Dr. David Perlmutter

If the gut is leaky and we lack serotonin, it can be linked to feelings of depression. In a study with probiotic yogurt, researchers found a dramatic change in brain function and mood in the test subjects that ate the yogurt compared to those who did not.

Build a Healthy Gut

At this moment, there is a diverse community of healthy, gut bacteria living inside of us. If any harm comes our gut's way, it can increase the chances of having a leaky gut. This leaky gut can lead to inflammation and degenerative diseases including:

  • Alzheimer's
  • Parkinson's
  • Diabetes
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cancer

The right way to eat food, is to focus on following a diet that helps reduce the chance of a leaky gut and inflammation from happening inside the body.

Do You Have a Leaky Gut?

In today's world, we should assume that it is likely that we all have somewhat of a leaky gut. We would have to take a test or participate in a study to know for sure by having an LPS level done in a lab.

There's a higher chance that you have a leaky gut if you have an inflammatory condition such as:

  • Depression
  • Early onset Parkinson's
  • Alzheimer's
  • Joint issues
  • Skin inflammation
  • Autism

What can you do to heal your leaky gut?

To help heal your gut, remove any offensive agents that may be harming it such as any overuse of:

  • Antibiotics
  • GMOs
  • Drinking chlorinated water
  • Artificial sugars and sweeteners
  • Acid blocking drugs
    • Proton pump inhibitors
    • Non-steroid and anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Stress

To heal our gut, we need to stimulate and increase the diversity of the organisms that live inside of the gut by exercising and eating foods that are rich in pre-biotic fiber that helps nurture our gut bacteria:

  • Mexican yam/ jicamo
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Leek
  • Dandelion greens
  • Kimchi
  • Kobucha
  • Yogurt
  • Fermented vegetables

The Truth About Sugar and Gluten

"Inflammation caused by sugar consumption can lead to diabetes and quadruples your chances for Alzheimer's Disease." - Dr. David Perlmutter

For decades, we've been told that gluten and sugar is good for our health and that fat is bad. However, recent research has shown that this is the exact opposite.

Healthy fat is good for both the body and brain function, but gluten and sugar (including artificial sugar and sweeteners) can cause our insulin levels to spike which leads to inflammation in the body.

In fact, according to Dr. Perlmutter, artificial sweeteners were created to help people control the amount of sugars in their diet, but still be able to taste something sweet. Unfortunately, artificial sugars and sweeteners can dramatically increase a person's risk for obesity and diabetes.

Take your health into your own hands by making good choices. Eat healthy and avoid any sugary drinks, high gluten foods, and anything labeled "sugar free" or "contains artificial sugars."

The Best Sources of Healthy Fat

There's a lot of taboo hanging around the words, "fat" and "fatty food." However, healthy sources of fat are great for our bodies and important for our brain's health.

According to Dr. Perlmutter, the brain is already made up of a lot of saturated fat and even human breast milk is 50% saturated fat. If you want to ensure that you follow a healthy diet, use the Ketogenic and Mediterranean diets as a good model to follow.

The best sources of healthy fats include:

  • Extra virgin olive oil (organic)
  • Fatty fish with DHA
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Avocado
  • Grass-fed and free-range meat

Olive oil particularly is good source of polyphenols that act as antioxidants and nurture the gut bacteria. This source of healthy fat provides both mono and unsaturated fats for our brain cell building blacks.

When you follow a Ketogenic or Mediterranean based diet, but add extra amounts of olive or cocnut oil, your cognitive function can improve dramatically.

A Diet to Help Prevent Alzheimer's Disease

To better understand your body and gene makeup, there are numerous services available from companies that offer biometrics tests including:

The sooner you better understand your genes and if there is a chance for you to have an inflammatory disease, the sooner you can take action to fight against it.

Depending on our dietary fat composition, there is a risk of dementia or Alzheimer's Disease, but it can be handled by following a diet that includes food that is high in healthy fats.

As mentioned before, we should be eating more nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocado. Monosaturated fats such as almond oil, almond butter/nut butter, an oleic acid in sunflower oil can help prevent degenerative brain disease.

However, we should avoid canola oil, vegetable oil, corn oil and other modified oils in our diets. These are the unhealthy oils that can harm our body and brain function.

Build a Healthy Brain with Aerobics

If you want to build a healthy brain, change your diet, but also increase the amount of aerobic exercise. Working out helps to turn on BDNF (Brain-derived neurotrophic factor) which serves as a growth hormone for the brain and helps increase the number of memory cells throughout our lifetime.

People who exercise regularly can reduce their chances for Alzheimer's Disease by 50%!

One of the best things you can do to help your brain stay healthy is to include aerobic exercise for 20 minutes every day.

6 Key Factors For a Whole Life Plan

According to Dr. Perlmutter, there are 6 key factors and goals that take place in creating a whole life plan for a healthy brain and gut:

  • Reducing and controlling inflammation
  • Turning the body into a fat burning machine
  • Balancing levels of bacteria
  • Balancing hormones and increasing leptin sensitivity
  • Taking care of our genes
  • Balancing our life

The cornerstone of Dr. Perlmutter’s unique approach to neurological disorders is founded in the principles of preventive medicine. He has brought to the public awareness a rich understanding that challenging brain problems including Alzheimer’s disease, other forms of dementia, depression, and ADHD may very well be prevented with lifestyle changes including a gluten free, low carbohydrate, higher fat diet coupled with aerobic exercise.

"We have two different options. One option is that we can suppress and cover up our skin's problems with creams, makeup, or topical steroids. However, this is not really addressing the root problem of what is going on with our body. The other option is to really look at what the body is trying to tell us. The body is so wise and it's so important to pay attention to the signals that our skin gives us instead of ignoring them." - Dr. Trevor Cates

The skin is an incredible organ that protects our underlying tissues, organs, and bones. Each day, it keeps us insulated, controls our body temperature, and helps us take in essential Vitamin D from the sun.

The skin is also a key indicator that lets us know when our physical and emotional health is unbalanced. If our skin is dry, oil, itchy, or breaks out in acne, it's telling us that there is something else going on with our bodies that needs to be addressed.

If our skin is so amazing, shouldn't we do more for it by eating the right foods and give it the care that it needs to stay strong and healthy?

This week, licensed Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Trevor Cates aka The Spa Doctor shares her personal experience of dealing with skin problems and how we can heal our skin from within. You will learn how to use natural foods and real life methods so that you can have that healthy glowing skin no matter your age or race.

Discover The Root of Skin Problems

"We're all different because of our genes, but that doesn't mean that we're stuck with our genes. We can change our genetic expression based upon how we live. We can change the foods that we eat, the products that we use, or the toxins in our environment such as mold."   - Dr. Trevor Cates

We have the power to take control and improve our own health and wellness.

At a young age, Dr. Trevor Cates suffered from allergies and infections that led to bumps and itchy hives on her skin. Once her parents got in touch with a holistic practitioner, she learned exactly what her skin and body needed to be healthy again.  Soon enough, her skin cleared up and her self-confidence at school blossomed.

The root of Dr. Cates skin problems were not only because of her genetics, but also because of the organic milk that she was drinking and the toxic mold in her home.

Our skin acts as a magic mirror and can give us so many clues about our health. Take a moment a think to yourself, do you have the following indicators of poor skin health:

Is you skin __________?

  • Dry
  • Oily
  • Dull

Do you have__________?

  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Hives
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea

Whether we're experiencing mild or extreme cases, if these skin problems show up, it's a good indicator that something is out of balance in our bodies.

The Best and Worst Foods for Our Skin

There are many foods that can help improve the health of our skin, but there are also many trigger foods that can worsen it. Here, Dr. Trevor Cates has put together a list of The 5 Best and Worst Foods for Skin Inflammation:

5 Best Foods for Skin Inflammation:

  • Berries
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Ginger
  • Wild Alaskan Salmon
  • Cruciferous Vegetables

5 Worst Foods for Skin Inflammation:

  • Sugar
  • Dairy
  • Barbecued and overcooked meat
  • Refined grains
  • Trans fats and common cooking oils such as vegetable oil

Dr. Cates also shared that corn, soy, and nightshade foods (i.e. potatoes, paprika, tomato, and eggplant) also have a negative affect on our bodies.

In her upcoming book, Clean Skin From Within, she shares more information on what foods to eat and what to avoid.

How do we know what foods are best for us?

To learn about your own body and what foods are good for your skin and what will make you break out, Dr. Cates suggests doing a 2 week to 1 month challenge to discover what specific trigger foods affect your health.

During the challenge, eliminate any of the top trigger/ worst foods for your skin from your diet. At the end of the challenge, slowly reintroduce each food once at a time and see if you react to the food in a negative manner.

Dr. Cates also has a 21 Healthy Habits Challenge.

Avoid Harmful Ingredients on Your Skin

"If you can't put it in your month, then you probably shouldn't put it on your skin."                    - Dr. Trevor Cates

On average, we use 9 personal care products each day such as: shampoo, fragrance, shaving cream, lotion, face wash, deodorant, hair gel, makeup etc. More often than not, these products contain ingredients that are harmful toxins or hormone disrupting chemicals.

Dr. Trevor Cates shared several specific ingredients that we should stay away from. You may click here to read her entire blog post, Are Your Skincare Products Causing a Hormone Imbalance?

Even if products claim to be "natural," it's just a word that is used to hide the fact that the ingredients include synthetic fragrance and other hormone disrupting chemicals such as diethyl phthalate and DMDM hydantoin aka formaldehyde releasers.

Fragrance

Diethyl phthalate is a plasticizing agent that is used to help hold the scent in fragrance. Even though we all want to smell good, a long-lasting scent is connected to headaches, dizziness, asthma, and allergies.

A better alternative is to use essential oils if you want to smell good all day. Do your research and find a company that you know you can trust and one that uses clean extraction processes for their essential oil products.

Beauty Products

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and irritant found in nail products, hair dye, fake eyelash adhesives, and some shampoos. It is banned in the European Union, but unfortunately the FDA still allows it to be used as an ingredient in our products.

Sunscreen

One common ingredient that also disrupts our hormones is oxybenzone. Stay away from products with this ingredient and replace it with something that includes minerals such as zinc oxide and anti-titanium dioxide. One of Dr. Cates' favorite sunscreens is from DeVita.

The Impact of Our Emotions on Our Skin

Genetics, food, and environmental toxins are not the only factors that affect our skin's health. Our emotional wellness plays a big part as well.

If we're emotionally unbalanced because of stress and other factors, this can affect our thyroid health and cortisol levels. Excess cortisol levels can help trigger skin inflammation which can create or worsen skin conditions.

To learn about your skin's health, Dr. Trevor Cates has a Skin Quiz that you can take. Here are Josh's results:

Take Action to Heal Your Family's Skin

"It's important that instead of using food to help us feel better, we should deal with what's really underlying there. Find out what are the emotional issues that are going on and address those issues. The sooner you can do that with kids, the better you can help them address their health on their own. It's so much better than to say, "Here's a piece of candy. Everything's gong to be okay." - Dr. Trevor Cates on comfort food and children

To help your family live life with healthy skin and bodies, lead by example. Whether they're 7 or 17, kids will pay attention to what their parents are doing and look up to them.

Eat healthy meals and encourage them to do the same.

Instead of serving the same traditional kid meals i.e. Mac n' Cheese or hot dogs, introduce new foods at an early stage. Take them to different restaurants such as Thai or Indian to help them learn to appreciate and try different foods. The earlier, the better.

Pay attention to your children's dietary needs as well. If you know that some foods affect their skin, teach them what foods are not good for them and what substitutes are better for their health. If you know that your child shouldn't eat gluten or dairy, take a moment to teach them the importance of following their diet.

Walk them through a self analysis by asking questions:

  • What did you eat?
  • How did you feel after you ate? How do you feel now?
  • What should you eat in the future?

Tina Muir is a Saucony sponsored professional ELITE runner who recently represented Great Britain in the World Half Marathon Championships. Tina is the Community Manager for RunnersConnect and host of popular running podcast Run to the Top. Tina is originally from St. Albans, UK, now living in Lexington, KY with her husband (and coach) Steve. With PRs of 16:08 (5k), 33:24 (10k), 1:13 (half marathon), 2:41 (marathon), Tina may have elite speed, but she candidly shares what it means to train, live and breathe your dreams (while still maintaining balance!) on her blog tinamuir.com.

"Running is a lot like life. The more you persevere through those difficult moments, the better it feels afterwards. I realized early on that if I could persevere better than most people, I would feel so much better knowing that I overcame the mental demons while I was running." - Tina Muir

On this podcast, Tina shares her experiences and expertise, what it takes to build a strong body and mind, and most importantly how it feels to use running for life and wellness in an open and honest way.

Running For Health, Wellness, and Life

Every year hundreds of thousands of new runners lace up their new shoes and hit the pavement striding towards their wellness and health goals.  For Tina, and many of us on the wellness path,  running is more than just breaking a sweat, it's a way of living a wellness based life.

Over the past decade and beyond, Tina has worked her way to represent Great Britain as a professional athlete, but her road to the top has not come without busting through many personal and physical thresholds. She believes that whether you're an endomorph, ectomorph, or mesomorph, the right style of running has the potential to change not only your physical health, but to sharpen the edge of your mind.

As the community manager of Runners Connect, a pro, and busy wife, she literally runs and walks her talk.

From surmounting panic attacks, growing personal power, and upgrading emotional health, Tina believes in following her heart; it's the message she spreads not only on the Run to The Top podcast but on her highly popular running blog called "Fuel Your Future."

She reminds us with her life's work how running can be a beautiful mirror for the mental hurdles we all scale.

"With running, it's actually us against sabotaging ourselves." - Tina Muir

Being Imperfectly Perfect

Tina shares openly and honestly in this Wellness Force Radio podcast and on her blog about running outside of the current paradigm where runners are "supposed" to look:

"For me, yes I could lose those extra few pounds, but then I risk sending myself down a dark, obsessive path, and it would mean I would not get to enjoy the cake and ice cream that does make me happy, so I would rather stay as I am, but know I am enjoying my food, and staying healthy as a runner.Every single body has something to celebrate. Every single runner has their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and that should be taken into account. Do not spend your life trying to look like someone else, spend your life doing what makes you happy, and the rest will follow." - Tina Muir

Oct 24, 2016

"I don't want someone to feel that they need my help. I want them to feel empowered about their body. The most powerful part about the whole journey with anyone that I've ever worked with is the long-term sustainable result. I want you to leave my care and I want you to teach your family and other people how to be healthy." - Dr. Matt Accurso on encouraging his health participants to feel empowered about their own health.

Many sources have claimed that we can only combat weight loss resistance and gain high performance energy if we stick to a strict "one fits all" nutrition and exercise regime. However, living a healthy lifestyle isn't just about checking off a doctor's to do list as we go through life.

Health goes beyond the surface with a closer look at our body's cells, hormones, gut, and brain connection.

Lead Training Doctor at Designer Health Centers, Dr. Matt Accurso, shares his experience and tips on how we can become health empowered, lose old weight, and gain the energy we crave to develop into high performers.

Become Health Empowered

"Your body has the power to do what it needs to do. All I simply did was address the deficiencies and toxicities and then we let your body heal." - Dr. Matt Accurso on helping his health participants.

When you visit with your physician, don't see yourself as just a patient. Instead of just a patient, you are a health participant because you are there to take control of your own health.

A physician can help you with a medical problem that needs to be addressed with a short term solution. However, that one visit is not going to fix all of your health needs. Instead of relying on a physician, specialist, or therapist to fix all of your health problems, take control into your own hands.

You are empowered to live a long, healthy journey by making good decisions that will impact your health.

Defeat Weight Loss Resistance

Weight loss resistance happens when the brain is trying to communicate to the body yet cell receptors are blunted so they can't hear what's happening from the brain. By simply adding more good fats in your diet, you actually start to replenish those cells in the thyroid and gut."- Dr. Matt Accurso

Rather than looking at your body as a whole, look at it in parts and pieces like a puzzle. View the body from the outlook of its cells, organs, hormones, micronutrients, and gut health. Everything in the body plays an important part and anything could be preventing you from losing old weight.

Many popular diets will help people lose sugar weight, but they're not sustainable for long-term weight (Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, and traditional diets).

A long-term diet has to promote proper hormonal function health as well in the brain and body.

Two hormones in the body that are key to losing weight are leptin and ghrelin.

Regulate Hormones for Healthy Weight Loss

Ghrelin hormones increase hunger in the body and leptin manages energy, weight loss, and reducing appetite. Unlike other diets that focus on low-carb diets and staying away from fats, the Ketogenic Diet focuses on eating healthy fats.

Once you've reached the ketosis stage, your body is better at regulating the ghrelin and leptin hormones to help increase weight loss.

Not only will Ketosis help increase the body's weight loss, but it will also replenish the body's cells. Once thyroid and gut cells are replenished, they can better community with the brain.

Regain Your Energy

Depending on what you eat on a day-to-day basis and your sleep cycle, you may find yourself with either little energy or a sufficient amount to get you through the day.

If you find yourself exhausted or getting very little sleep, pay attention to you diet.

If a person does not have enough healthy fats in their diet is consuming too many toxins, they need they pay closer attention to their diet. Without healthy fats and nutrition, a person may have a macronutrient deficiency that is creating interruptions during the REM sleep cycle.

If you wake up feeling energized, but then crash after lunch, you might not be getting the nutrients you need to help you rest and regain your energy.

Sleep and diet are key to feeling energized from morning to night. One method is to get into a state of Ketosis so that your body is burning fat on a regular basis. Otherwise, you can make simpler changes to your diet including:

  • Not snacking between meals.
  • Eating a low-carb diet and healthy fats i.e. nuts and seeds.
  • Starting to take vitamins and supplements without USPS vitamins.

Following a healthy diet that can increase your energy for higher performance means eating more:

  • Fresh water fish with fatty Omega 3
  • Free range white meat
  • Grass fed red meat

Specific foods with Omega 3 have so many benefits i.e.:

  • Triggering healthy hormones
  • Increasing cell-to-cell communication
  • Improving your brain's and body's health

Beat Fatigue with Neurological Overload Sets

One way to beat fatigue is to do Neurological Overload Sets (created by Ben Pakulski). NOS is a functional fitness type approach exercise to help you fatigue your nervous system while fatiguing the muscle by doing 60-80% of your max power and then holding position at the end of each set for about 20 seconds.

By overloading the nervous system, you can optimize your energy levels and reconnect the brain synopsis. Other exercises such as Pilates, Tabata, and anything else that includes an isometric hold and nervous system training is great to enhance the brain's memory and function.

Enjoy the Seasons of Life

"Don't beat yourself up if you're going through a season."

As we go through life, we strive to do it all and as hard as we might try, it's impossible to do everything at once. We all go through different seasons or stages of life that come and go as soon as we begin to experience them.

Maybe you've already experienced the seasons of beginning college, a career, or your own family? Each season is different and has it's ups and downs that can create stress within the body and mind.

To gain more energy and peace of mind, focus on enjoying and respecting that season. Take your time and be easy on yourself.

You might have to adjust your schedule and habits according to that season, but that doesn't mean you can stop focusing on your health or what is important to you. Know your triggers and what's going to crush your energy.

Turn to Positive Thinking

Because our body is one big puzzle piece, not only are our organs, cells, and brain connected, but our hormones and genetics as well. In fact, our genetics and thoughts give us this amazing power to structure our environment when we turn on the right genes and think positively.

But what happens if negative thoughts creep up and block us from achieving high performance? Dr. Matt Accurso has this great system to help him create positive thoughts.

If he feels a negative thought comes into his head when he wakes up first thing in the morning, he doesn't get up until he's replaced it with a positive thought in his mind. What does he think about?

He turns to thoughts of gratefulness while maintaining a breathing pattern until he feels enough joy and happiness that those negative thoughts have disappeared.

If you're experiencing negative thoughts, I encourage you to try this method. I know I will!

"What's amazing is that knowing your health data can only help you. There's never been anyone that hasn't benefited or been harmed by knowing more about their cholesterol, thyroid function, inflammation, or Vitamin D levels. You can only benefit from a blood test."- Dr. Murdoc Khaleghi

How much can your blood panels reveal about your health? This week, author, physician, and Medical Director at WellnessFX, Dr. Murdoc Khaleghi, talks about the importance of blood tests and explains how a personalized analysis can make your physical and emotional health bulletproof.

Make Your Health Bulletproof

We all know that knowledge is power. Therefore, to fully understand where our health stands and to become bulletproof, we need to look at the entire picture. Maybe you don't feel good and don't know why?

Thanks to blood tests, we can learn more than we ever could before about our personal health. With this knowledge, we're given the opportunity to make necessary life changes to feel better each day and prevent disease in the future.

A blood test can tell you so much about your biomarker levels and organ functions. Take advantage of this valuable information and make good, healthy changes in your life.

Take Advantage of Blood Tests

As we evolve as a society, we're becoming more aware of the importance of our health. With all of the benefits that blood tests give us, we can lead healthier lives.

Taking a blood test may sound scary if you think about needles and having your blood drawn. However, the process is simple and can help you learn so much about your body and mental health.

Oct 11, 2016

"Money is just an exchange of energy. The challenge with money is when we do not have a healthy relationship with money and that's where we usually deflect it."- Ryan Yokome

What do you think about when you hear the word, "money?"  What do you feel when you receive your monthly paycheck? Do you have happy thoughts and feeling of relief and relaxation? Or do you have negative thoughts and feel anxious with worry?

Today, CEO of Money & Miracles Breakthrough Coaching and the Co-Founder of the Soulful Money MasterclassRyan Yokome, shares how we can tap into our own lives to discover and  embrace the currency of wellness

Change Your Mindset on Money

"When you know who you are and you know yourself and you're comfortable with that, you can go anywhere and do anything because you don't have to be someone that you're not. You can show up as you and it's so liberating and freeing."- Ryan Yokome

Each of us has a personal story with money and it begins with our background and our parents' relationship with money. Whether or not their relationship with money was good, if they said something about money or had a certain attitude and behavior towards it, we picked up on that when we were younger.

Fortunately, their experience with money does not have to be the same as our story and relationship with money. To help us change our own money story, Ryan explained the concept of Be-Do-Have and its reversal pattern, Have-Do-Be.

A majority of us believe that there is a lack of money. However, it is an abundant source of energy that is always available to us. All we have to do is change our thinking and approach to money and do reverse thinking with Have-Do-Be.

First believe that you already have the money that you need. Next, do something differently that will allow you to receive that money and finally become that person who has the money.

Focus on the Essence of Money

"How you tap into a different space of magnetizing money in your life is how you focus on the essence. You focus on the feeling that money will give you if you had those things now. What's the essence? Would you feel more joy, happiness, relaxed? Cause you're not actually after money, but a feeling. "-Ryan Yokome

The key to help you change your mindset on money is to focus on the essence of money and what it means to you.

How do you feel if you imagine that you already have all the money or monthly paycheck that you need to get to where you want to be? Is it happiness? Relaxation? Success?

You don't want money, but a feeling. The feeling that money gives you. As soon as you focus on that feeling, you will change what you do because your actions will be different and you'll become a different person during that process.

You want to put all these feelings about money on the table and process the feeling to help make the unconscious conscious. What's your story with money? Is it your story or your family's story?

Tap Into The 5 Positive Money Beliefs

"The currency of wellness is connection."- John W. Travis, MD, MPH

To experience the positive mindset change of currency, Ryan explained the 5 Positive Money Beliefs:

1) Meaning

Money is neutral and we are the ones who give it energy and meaning. You can actually experience how your life is changing depending on how you approach money.

Money gives meaning when you notice external changes such as where you live, what possessions you have, what food you eat each day etc.

People will also give you clues that money is changing your life because they will notice it too. They will notice that there is something different about you.

Lastly, because we can change the energy and meaning that money gives us, you decide what your money story is and will be.

Life is not based on luck or genes, but the choices that we make and that creates our money story.

2) Relationships

Treat money as if it were a person. Now, how would you treat money if you were dating it? How do you treat it when you log into your online bank account or when you get paid? Does it give you happiness or cause you stress?

3) Purpose

What is the purpose of money for you? Why do you want to make more money and what do you want to do with it?

If you're not giving money a purpose or being intentional with it, then you're not connecting with it. Ryan gave a great example that you connect with your money when you pay your bills because that money helps pay the salaries of the employees of the other business.

When you give your money a purpose, you tap into the essence of it and how it makes you feel.

4) Giving

Ryan believes that if you give to another person, that you're actually giving back to yourself as well. So if you shift into a different state of love and abundance, you pass that feeling on to other people.

Giving the genuine feelings of love and abundance to others is just what many of us need to feel that excitement and purpose for life that we crave.

Give compliments, a smile, or a "Have a nice day!" with real feeling the next time you're at the check out counter.

5) Receiving

For many of us, it is so much easier to give than to receive because we haven't learned how to receive love. Past relationships and experiences have caused us to feel like we didn't receive the love that we wanted or needed.

Because of this, it can be hard to receive love from others or we don't know why other people are tryitng to give us love. Especially in a world of technology, we are starving for true connection with other people, but we don't know how to accept it when it's given to us.

When we receive money from work or as a gift from another person, we can practice receiving love and abudance from another source. This source that will help us buy food, pay for a home, and use to help us get to where we want to be in life.

Self Love, Juicing, & Transformation

From Drews MindBodyGreen post: "I've come to realize that one of the biggest obstacles preventing people from achieving a transformation is their failure to answer one simple question: "Why?"

"Why do I want it?"

Too many people float through life with no rhyme or reason as to what they hope a transformation will do for them. They might know "what" they want, but they often don't know why they want it.

It's painful for many people, but I'm here to tell you, it doesn't have to be. Here's the deal. The leading motivation that will fuel your transformation is your answer to one simple question.

"Why do I want it?"

It's crucial that you know the answer. Treat it like it's your best friend. Keep feeding it. This is the most important thing, because when you don’t feel like eating healthy or working out, your answer will remind you why you started in the first place. Often, it's all the motivation you need to complete your transformation."

Drew's Story

"My parents taught us that money didn't make the person and that a true persons value came from their heart and what they did for others.” - Drew Canole

Fueled by small-town values and a big vision for a better planet, Drew Canole begins each day with one simple goal in mind – to positively impact the lives of others. Through his work as a Personal Coach and endeavors such as EnrichYourExistence.com and FitLife.tv, Drew aims to inspire and motivate others to search deep within themselves to create an abundant, healthy and fulfilling life. "Improve one life; improve the world."

Drew was born and raised in the small, rural community of Lake City in Northern Michigan. After attending Central Michigan University, he launched a successful career in finance before recognizing that his greatest talent was helping others discover their untapped potential. He currently resides in San Diego, where his work as an author, fitness specialist and transformation expert has made him one of the most reputable Personal Coaches in Southern California.

Drew is committed to the conviction that people are at their best when challenged. He pushes others to bust through personal barriers and reach new heights in physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Coming To Life

"I'm just focused on what brings me to life. And me coming to life, when people see that, that's magic. Not only are they inspired in that moment and want to drink green juice, but they also start to see what's possible with who they are in themselves." - Drew Canole

"I am Drew Canole. I could delve into a list of my accomplishments and accolades, highlighting my tenure as a successful entrepreneur and Internet marketer, but I’ll spare you. Time is precious. Instead, I shall use this time to hopefully touch your soul and shift it for eternity. You see, most people live their whole lives doing something that they are not really “here to do.” For anybody who feels pulled, who feels the whole world is smiling at them, I offer guidance. For those who have found their flow or are working on their muse, I offer this – do it.

Drew Canole is merely a name that has been given to me. Today is a day like any other day in my life. My purpose is far greater than any 10 letters, and my days are devoted to helping people discover a life they never realized existed. My dream and my hope is much bigger than the physical man that I am. If you feel like you are here for a purpose, contact me. If you need help discovering what that purpose is, I am interested in hearing about the "real" you. After all, the world needs more people like us.

I am Drew Canole. Who are you?"

Facebook Questions From Today's Show

From Shannon:

"Two of the biggest transformations in my life thus far required a stripping away of relationships that were holding me back or keeping me small, but I imagine that the opposite can be true - that deep, spiritual connection in relationship can spark a transformation as well.

I'd love to hear Drew's viewpoint on the power of relationship in catalyzing personal transformation. I'd also love to know how he strikes a balance when it comes to transformation - that desire to go deep within, which perhaps could be construed by others as being "selfish" or too focused on the self, versus being in relationship, which can sometimes feel like a distraction from the transformation itself.

Is there a middle ground, and if so, what are his viewpoints in finding that center?"

From Shanna:

"I’d love to know how Drew achieves BALANCE in his life. With all I have going on, I sometimes feel like I put all my eggs in one basket and then another area of my life suffers."

Darryl Edwards is a Movement Coach, Natural Lifestyle Educator and creator of the Primal Play Method;™ developed to inspire others to make activity fun while getting healthier, fitter and stronger in the process.

"Primal Play is about making fitness fun and ensuring that the individual can experience the joy of movement again. Many of us have fallen out of love with movement, and we focus on fitness or exercise which then becomes pain and punishment as the way to get fit. What we should be thinking about is what we can enjoy that will get us there, rather than what we must endure to get fit." - Darryl Edwards

Finding The Joy of Movement

Darryl's journey of paleo and natural movement began over ten years ago when he had iron-deficiency anemia, hypertension, and 26 percent body fat. He felt weak, lethargic, and suffered from insomnia along with debilitating lower back and knee pain. It didn’t take long after focusing on the Paleo approach to reap the benefits, and his improved health continues to this day.

To eventually lead thousands of people by teaching the joy of movement across the world, Darryl first had to feel the pain of physical discontent early in life.

Sitting for hours on end in his banking career, he began to train as most of us start training: in the gym and bored out of his mind. He intuitively felt from deep in his core that there must be a better way to live life well and attain the health and wellness he knew he deserved.

This is a sad reality that many gym goers, marathoners, and weekend warriors discover once their "no pain no gain" mentality simply can't support the lifestyle any longer. Listen as Darryl unpacks how anyone and everyone can learn to experience the joy of movement wherever they are and whatever health goals they might have.

Movement Breakthroughs

What  sparked radical change in Darryl's life was essentially finding the joy of play;  a reconnection to his childhood and the memories that brought happiness.

This discovery would come to be the catalyst for greater health in his own adult life.

In the video below from the ancestral health symposium in 2016,  Darrell discusses  his primal play method,  what it means to have physical health,  how to transform the current paradigm of exercise and fitness,  and gives an incredible lecture on physical activity for the new era.

What You'll Learn From This Episode

  • Why your body is in pain and what to do about it
  • How to make your workouts fun again no matter who you are
  • How to turn your workouts into play
  • The benefits of training in primal movement patterns
  • The differences between "paleo" fitness and regular fitness and exercise
  • Action steps to begin the integration of movement as play
  • Darryl's story about how he transitioned from working out in gyms to 100% functional movement

Sep 20, 2016

"In my life I've done a lot of physical things like marathons, challenge races and weight training, but vipassana was one of the hardest things I've ever done because it was so dependent purely on the mind. When we work out and go through physical pain, you can push through it because there's a stimulus there. When you sit in silence, the hardest part about it is that's there is nothing else to do besides face your thoughts, face your feelings, and face what's going on inside." - Josh Trent

Vipassana Meditation - 10 Days In The Desert of Your Soul

Today's show welcomes fitness and wellness celebrity Scott Colby as our guest host interviewing Wellness Force Founder, Josh Trent, on his 10 day Vipassana meditation experience in Joshua Tree, CA at the Dhamma Southern California Vipassana Center .

This episode is for you if you've never meditated in your life and it has always been something you've wanted to try, or even if you're a seasoned meditator looking for that next step on how to grow your life's practice.

We're also going to discuss Scott Colby's partnership with Pencils of Promise and his incredible service to Guatemalan children schools through the "say it with gratitude stationary sets" fund raiser towards the end of the episode which Wellness Force is honored to support.

Why do hundreds of thousands of people globally complete an annual vipassana?

Most students embark on a vipassana with the intention to achieve greater inner peace and harmony through the mental training of "thought purification" which allows one to face life's tensions and problems in a calm, balanced way. Vipassana meditation, essentially, is a practice of what founder Mr. S.N. Goenka calls "The Art of Living" that one can use to get out of their own way to begin making greater positive contributions in society.

This may sound empowering and healing, which many studies report to be true, but be warned: this practice is not for everyone, rather it is only for the one who feels called to it at the right time in their life.

As Yogi & Best-selling Author Karan Bajaj says: "Just sitting with your spine erect for eleven hours a day can be a challenge, now add complete silence and two sparse meals a day to it, and you’re guaranteed some level of physical and emotional agony."

Why You Get To Do A Vipassana

Meditation is a essentially a practice that teaches focusing attention inwards. This could be done with a mantra, breathing techniques, or by using visualizations. There are numerous ways to practice meditation, and all of them center around becoming more self aware.

The main difference of vipassana however is found in its technique of "body scanning" that students learn through a process of relaxation without the normal stimuli of instant gratification it has become so accustomed to and even in some cases, addicted to.

In an era filled with the weapons of mass distraction, vipassana arms students with the tools they can use to rise above mindless actions in our modern world.

Because of the long durations of sittings in the training, vipassana allows the student to discover powerful insights about the subconscious roots of their unresolved anger, discontent, and other emotional issues. Once these issues can be seen, felt, and worked through in silence, a new mental narrative can be spoken which helps to lower overall stress and anger while boosting future emotional balance and mental health.

Vipassana training is also helpful in maintaining emotional balance, treating neurosis, and other unhealthy emotional conditions.

The foundation of the vipassana practice is sīla — moral conduct. Sīla provides a basis for the development of samādhi — concentration of mind; and purification of the mind is achieved through paññā — the wisdom of insight.

Benefits of vipassana include:

  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Reduced cortisol levels
  • Corrected circadian rhythm
  • Increased body awareness leading to lifestyle change
  • Increased mental faculties for memory, cognition, and decision making
  • Insights on how to let go of existential stressors
  • The formations of new healthy habits
  • Increased patience and persistence in the tasks of everyday life

"I became interested in this vipassana journey about 4 months ago after interviewing Karan Bajaj on the podcast and felt the pull to go to the desert for the 10 days of silent meditation. When I arrived and sat for the first night, I quickly felt just how intense and demanding these 10 days would be." - Josh Trent

The Benefits of Delayed Gratification

In our current society, where smart phones and calendars rule, if we're not paying attention, it is far too easy to become a slave to the mind.

By intentionally practicing the art of delayed gratification with Vipassana, students begin noticing the difference in thought processes where they can consciously control the directions of which the Amygdala sends its impulses.

Beyond just the physical challenges of sitting in silence for 100+ hours in 10 days on the body, the long stillness and silence also supports the growth of new synapses where increased mental toughness, patience, and delayed gratification can further develop.

Benefits of practicing delayed gratification include:

  • Increased happiness
  • Improvements in practicing gratitude
  • Greater financial habits and health
  • Improved physical health
  • Higher levels of appreciation

“One can have no smaller or greater mastery than mastery of oneself.” — Leonardo da Vinci

A Spartan Race For The Mind

For the 10 days of the course, all students agree to maintain "noble silence" which includes refraining from talking, exercising, looking at other students, and communicating by hand gestures with other students. With the removal of all stimuli, the metaphor of vipassana is like "a spartan race for the mind."

As Josh Trent says:

"By day 7 - I had had enough.  7 grueling days of going through what felt like excruciating pain with a numbness in my butt and a stabbing in my hips I'd never experienced before.

The 4am wake up gong at my window. Two hours of meditation before a breakfast of oatmeal.

The strict daily routine in the confined environments. No writing, reading, or exercise.

There were around 100+ of us sitting in a dimly lit meditation hall sun up to sun down.

The distractions of modern life—phones, work, movies, music, — all gone.

All that is left do do is sit for 7-10 hours a day in total silence and breathe.

I glanced around and could see I wasn't the only one struggling.
