About Paleovalley

The story of Paleovalley is a love story. Autumn and Chas Smith, co-founders, met in 2007, fell in love, and married on the magical Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, CA. This year they were blessed with an amazing baby boy, Maverick.

Autumn suffered acute digestive issues since she was a teenager and numerous experts failed to offer solutions that worked. Very concerned, Chas took matters into his own hands. His extensive research lead him to the paleo diet.

Together they implemented its principles for 30 days (eliminated refined foods, shopped at local farmers’ market, ate fresh organic fruits and vegetables, grass fed meats and wild seafood) and by the end, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved. Autumn was so inspired that she quit her job as a personal trainer at the Tracy Anderson Method, and earned a master’s degree in holistic nutrition.

Though they originally focused on disseminating information, they soon realized that there simply weren’t many truly healthy food products on the market. Many products claimed and even appeared to be to be healthy, using all the buzzwords such as gluten free, soy free, dairy free, natural and more but they were also nutrient free; free of the minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that promote thriving health.

Realizing that they had an important job to do, Autumn and Chas joined forces with Chas' brother Matt and a good friend, Matthew, and launched Paleovalley with the belief that everything you eat and every added ingredient is an opportunity to either detract from your health or improve it.

Their mission is to create products that live up to their own strict standards and always prioritize health over profit. Paleovalley creates products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health.

They strive to inspire people to view every dietary choices for what it really is: a profound opportunity to love and care for oneself. Paleovalley products are a labor of love, and their only hope is that they help your family feel as vibrant as theirs.

About Autumn Smith

Autumn Smith PaleoValley

Autumn Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. She began her academic career with a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in dance from the University of Montana. Upon graduation, Autumn danced professionally while becoming a certified yoga instructor. Hoping to combine her love of dance with her passion for health, Autumn became a celebrity fitness trainer with Tracy Anderson, most notably completing a world tour with Jennifer Lopez.

While working as a fitness trainer, Autumn could see that exercise alone was not enough for many of her clients to achieve the radiant health they worked so hard to achieve. Meanwhile, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and anxiety continued to plague her personal health, starting in adolescence. These frustrations further ignited her passion and interest in the study of holistic nutrition. Through self-guided research, she and her husband, Chas, healed her IBS with the paleo diet. She then studied with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating to become a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and Hawthorn University where she obtained a Masters in Holistic Nutrition. In 2013, she founded Paleo valley with her husband and brother-in-law. Paleo valley’s mission is to disseminate excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide. Autumn's commitment to health reached new heights last year following the birth of their son, Maverick.

Sal Di Stefano and Adam Schafer from www.mindpupmedia.com chat with Josh Trent LIVE from Lake Tahoe during the Spartan World Championship 2017 event.

Sal Di Stefano

Sal was 14 years old when he touched his first weight and from that moment he was hooked. Growing up asthmatic, frequently sick and painfully skinny, Sal saw weightlifting as a way to change his body and his self-image. In the beginning, Sal’s body responded quickly to his training but then his gains slowed and then stopped altogether. Not one to give up easily, he began reading every muscle building publication he could get his hands on to find ways to bust through his plateau. He read Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, Mentzer’s Heavy Duty, Kubrick’s Dinosaur Training, and every muscle magazine he could find; Weider’s Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Iron Man and even Muscle Media 2000. Each time he read about a new technique or methodology he would test it out in the gym. At age 18 his passion for the art and science of resistance training was so consuming that he decided to make it his profession and become a personal trainer. By 19 he was managing health clubs and by 22 he owned his own gym. After 17 years as a personal trainer he has dedicated himself to bringing science and TRUTH to the fitness industry. Check out Sal's Instagram page HERE.

Dr. Andy Galpin: "Unplugged"

Andy Galpin Unplugged

In the first quarter of 2016, Americans bought 19.7 million fitness wearables, an increase of 67 percent over the previous year. By 2020, the global market for fitness-focused apps and devices is expected to grow to $30 billion. This means that more than ever, we’re looking at our wrists not only to check the time, but also to see how much we’ve moved, monitor our heart rate, and see how we’re stacking up against yesterday’s tallies.

Our technology addiction has made us lose connection with what's going on around us. This is bad enough in the gym, but when we get outside, the constant checking of a tiny screen truly wreaks havoc, downgrading what should be a rich experience into yet another task we need to complete to meet our daily goals. And if we fall short, we feel inadequate. There’s also the issue of data inaccuracy, with many device makers now admitting that their gadgets provide only estimates. So why do we continue to obsess over data and treat it as gospel truth?

Unplugged provides a blueprint for using technology to meet your health and performance goals in a much smarter way. In addition to sharing the performance expertise of Brian Mackenzie and the scientific insight of Dr. Andy Galpin, Unplugged features exclusive stories and advice from elite athletes and world-renowned experts like Laird Hamilton, Tim Ferriss, Kai Lenny, Kelly Starrett, Steven Kotler, Erin Cafaro, Lenny Wiersma, Dr. Frank Merritt, and Brandon Rager.

About Andy Galpin

Andy Galpin Image

Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. He was born and raised in beautiful Rochester, WA and is a die-hard Seahawks, Huskies, & Mariner fan. RIP Sonics. As a youth, Andy played every sport at his disposal, excelling at Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track & Field. While not playing, he worked at grocery stores, gas stations, hay fields, blueberry farms, and in the road construction business. It was during this time he discovered Strength & Conditioning.

Andy took his limited talents to Linfield College to join their Football team and pursue a degree in Exercise Science. While he experienced great success in both (2004 National Championship and 2x Captain and immediate inductee into the "All Ugly" Team), the true reward of this time was the meeting of lifelong friend (Doug Larson). The two fed each other's pursuit of knowledge of human performance and led them to attend the University of Memphis for the Masters degrees in Human Movement Sciences. A bit of luck and excellent faculty mentoring led Doug and Andy to meet Mike Bledsoe and the man formally known as "Barbell Buddha" Chris Moore - all of which later led to the creation of the #1 Health & Fitness Podcast in the world Barbell Shrugged. It also marked the start of Andy's competitive Weightlifting (culminating in his 7th Place finish in the 2007 National Championships), Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu careers.

Needing to know more about muscle, Andy spent 4 years studying the structure and function of human skeletal muscle at the single cell level, a feat which earned him a PhD in Human Bioenergetics in 2011. This also resulted in the friendship with frequent collaborator Dr. Jimmy Bagley and the ability to open up his own "Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory" at CSU Fullerton.

Alwyn Cosgrove The New Rules of Lifting

Want to get more out of your workout and spend less time in the gym? Many guys devote so many hours to lifting weight yet end up with so little to show for it. In many cases the problem is simple: they aren't doing exercises based on the movements their bodies were designed to do. Six basic movements - the squat, deadlift, lunge, push, pull and twist - use all of the body's major muscles. And, more important, they use those muscles in coordinated action, the way they were designed to work.

The New Rules of Lifting, now in paperback and with more than one hundred photographs, gives you more than a year's worth of workouts based on these six basic movements. Whether you're a beginner, an experienced lifter looking for new challenges, or anything in between, you can mix and match the workouts to help you get bigger, stronger and leaner. In addition, the comprehensive nutritional information provided makes The New Rules of Lifting a complete guide to reaching all your goals. If you aren't using The New Rules of Lifting, you aren't getting the best possible results.

Top 3 Takeaways From The Episode

  • We have the power to break down limiting beliefs and change our behavior. Although it seems challenging, we can choose to focus on empowering thoughts which will lead to different actions. Doing this will awaken the parts of ourselves that we have forgotten and point our lives in the direction we desire.
  • Our happiness and fulfillment can't be conditional upon something in the future. When we rely on imagined future events to make us happy, this causes stress and disappointment in the present. But if we start to realize that everything we need is inside of us right now, we can enjoy each day and embrace our journey of self-discovery.
  • We have to practice turning down the voice of the inner critic. Being overly hard on ourselves is not an effective form of motivation and beating ourselves up will make the things we are going through that much harder to deal with.

Power Quotes From Christine Hassler

"Our outer experience is often a reflection of our inner reality." - Christine Hassler @ChristinHassler - http://bit.ly/2xS7gGt

"My job as a life coach is to help people identify whats in the way between where they are and where they want to be." - Christine Hassler

"There will always be that little kid inside of us. Part of our job as an adult is learning how to reparent that child." - Christine Hassler

"My primary responsibility is to evolve my own consciousness." - Christine Hassler

"It's a grand illusion that we're alone and separate. It's been forgotten that we're completely connected to source and to each other." - Christine Hassler

"Our outer experience is always a reflection of our inner reality." - Christine Hassler

"It's resisting our emotions that creates our anxiety." - Christine Hassler

"I like being a human detective and helping people put the pieces of their life together." - Christine Hassler

Christine's Book: "Expectation Hangover"

The Expectation Hangover Christine Hassler

When our expectations are met and things go according to plan, we feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. Risking little, we feel safe, in control, and on-track. But when life throws us a curveball or does not live up to our expectations, we end up with an Expectation Hangover. This particular brand of discomfort is profoundly sobering and uncomfortable.

Christine Hassler urges us to not wallow in regret, self-recrimination, or anger, and instead see these hangovers as a catalyst for profound transformation. Often life has to throw us a curveball (or several) so that we look in a different direction.

When we fully treat our Expectation Hangover on the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual level, we learn courage, faith, surrender, and love, and we make room for the kind of unexpected things that lead us more directly to a life we love—rather than a life we planned.

As someone who has spent over 20 years as a vegetarian and five as a vegan, this caught me by surprise. (It's a weird place to be when you've authored a Vegan Teen Cookbook.)

The reason I had to become ex-vegan? Genetics."

His challenge proved there is much more to transforming our bodies than just knowing what to do. It also requires a degree of mental and emotional fitness to take action and follow through with our plan.

Listen To Episode 131 As Drew Uncovers:

  • The experience of growing up with 10 siblings and how this impacted his health and fitness
  • Why he decided to gain over 70 lbs to better understand his client's struggles
  • The emotional hardships of putting on excess weight
  • How stress can impact our lifestyle and wellness
  • Why developing mental and emotional fitness will help us overcome physical challenges
  • The power of owning our story and being vulnerable
  • How to navigate the feelings of stress and overwhelm
  • The importance of having a daily gratitude practice
  • How to cross the chasm between where we are and where we want to be
  • Ways to draw on support from our friends, family, and community
  • How to use meditation for overcoming decision fatigue
  • Why the industry is so focused on the Ketogenic diet
  • How to make a smooth transition into Ketosis and avoid the "Keto Flu"

Top 3 Takeaways From The Episode

  • We develop certain eating habits as children that can stay with us as we age. Although it's difficult to break the cycle of unhealthy eating, we can learn to enjoy fueling our body in a more nutritious way. Begin to focus on all of the benefits that come from living a healthy and energetic lifestyle. Keeping those thoughts front of mind will help us make better choices with our nutrition.
  • Developing more discipline will have a massive impact on what we accomplish in our lifetime.  We can begin doing this with small actionable steps every day. Studies have shown that simply making our bed each morning causes us to be 4-5 times more likely to achieve other daily goals. Start by taking 1 simple action in any area of life where you want to progress. This will build the momentum necessary for massive improvement.
  • The first step to a successful Ketogenic diet is giving the body time to adapt to that style of eating. This transition into Ketosis can generally take between 30-60 days. Once the body is used to running on ketones, we can begin experimenting with the different amounts and types of carbs we consume to help us discover what is optimal for our unique body.

Today's episode reveals the breakthrough weight-loss device "Modius," from Neurovalens. This non-invasive wearable headband is helping to reduce body fat and increase wellness through activation of the vestibular nerve.

JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST

Traditionally, wearables have focused on tracking and monitoring. They can tell us things like how many steps we've taken, and the body's heart rate and calorie intake.

But this new technology with Modius works by activating the parts of our brain that will dictate how our system holds onto fat. It creates a sensation in the mind of physical activity which will shift our metabolism and help to release excess weight.

On this podcast, we talk with Tom Bilyeu, co-founder of Quest Nutrition and host of the "Impact Theory" podcast, along with Dr. Jason Mckeown, CEO of Neurovalens. They explain how combined with proper diet and exercise, Modius may control how the wellness and medical communities approach obesity in the years to come.

Listen To Episode 130 As We Uncover:

  • How to control fat loss through vestibular nerve activation
  • Tom's fascination with neuroscience and its impact on wellness
  • Why Tom decided to join forces with Neurovalence
  • Jason's path that led him to study vestibular stimulation with Dr. Ramachandran
  • The meaning behind the name "Modius"
  • How the hypothalamus helps to control our level of body fat
  • Why vestibular stimulation will cause a metabolic shift in our body
  • The changes Tom can notice since wearing the Modius headband
  • How the body uses insulin and leptin to regulate our weight and appetite
  • Jason's health transformation after using Modius and adjusting his lifestyle
  • The cognitive benefits that come from movement and exercise
  • How the vestibular system can impact depression and anxiety
  • The relation between the vagus and vestibular nerves
  • How vestibular stimulation affects our sleep
  • Why the effects of Modius won't lead to a dependency on the device
  • How a gratitude practice can help reduce stress levels

Top 3 Takeaways From The Show

  • Weight loss can be challenging for many individuals. Sometimes even with proper diet and exercise, we can still hold onto fat. There is an ideal weight where the brain believes it should keep the body, and this level increases with a sedentary lifestyle and high-calorie diet. Through neurostimulation with the Modius, we can help change this determined set point for our body's fat storage and begin to release weight more easily.
  • Don't be closed-minded to technology empowering human potential. Forward-thinking innovation is no longer a convenience, but a necessity in the wellness world. We must continuously develop our body's intuition to help regulate our health and these new tools and technologies give us an upper-hand in the process.
  • The Modius device isn't the "end all be all" for weight loss, but it's being shown to help us get closer to our goals. We still have to adjust our lifestyle and take steps to increase our physical and emotional wellness if we want to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Power Quotes From Tom and Jason

Today's episode reveals the hidden aspects of our nature that determine how we respond to the expectations of ourselves and others.

JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST

On this podcast, we discover Gretchen Rubin's new book "The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How To Make Your Life Better (And Other People's Lives Better, Too)"

These 4 Tendencies give us a framework for how we react to the internal and external demands in our lives.  When we better understand these patterns in our behavior, we gain immense control over our actions and decisions.

Although our personality type may be deeply ingrained,  we can benefit from knowing these predictable behavioral patterns and set ourselves up for success.

Listen to Wellness Force Radio 129 as Gretchen shares her insight from decades of research in happiness, habits, and so much more.

Listen To Episode 129 As Gretchen Uncovers:

  • The personality framework that determines how we respond to expectations
  • Character traits of the Obliger, Questioner, Rebel, and Upholder
  • How to gain a deeper understanding of our actions
  • The benefit from identifying these predictable patterns of our behavior
  • The strengths and weaknesses of our different tendencies
  • How we can fine-tune our self-awareness
  • Why others may not see the world as we do
  • Ways to set our internal and external framework up for success
  • How these personality types play out in our relationships
  • Ways to understand how our behavior fits into predictable patterns
  • How we can avoid disempowering language
  • Why Gretchen prefers the newspaper over televised news
  • How to get the most out of yourself and others
  • How to set up the accountability we need to meet an inner expectation
  • The Four Tendencies in a nutshell:

The Four Tendencies

Upholders respond readily to outer and inner expectations

Questioners question all expectations; they’ll meet an expectation if they think it makes sense

Rebels resist all expectations, outer and inner alike

Obligers meet outer expectations, but struggle to meet expectations they impose on themselves

Click Here To Take The Four Tendencies Quiz

Top 3 Takeaways From Gretchen

  • These personality traits may be deeply ingrained, but the great thing is we don't need to try and change who we are. Just by knowing our tendencies, we can set ourselves up for success.
  • If you fall into the large category of Obligers, remember to be mindful of Obliger Rebellion. This is when the demands and expectations from others begin to overwhelm us, and we get to the point of burnout and resentment. Typically, this happens when the Obliger feels used or taken advantage of, which they typically are.  Set healthy boundaries for your external accountability.
  • It's important to know that not everyone thinks like we do. And sometimes we can get upset when people don't live up to our expectations. There are times when we can't quite comprehend why people do the things they do. If we understand the personality traits and nature of others, we can remove judgment and enhance our impact, interactions, and relationships.

Power Quotes From Gretchen Rubin

"The Four Tendencies help us illuminate the hidden aspects of our nature." - Gretchen Rubin

"Perfectionism isn't about standards, it's about anxiety." - Gretchen Rubin

"I believe these tendencies are hard-wired and genetically determined." - Gretchen Rubin

"Your upbringing and culture affect how your tendency is expressed." - Gretchen Rubin

"An upholder doesn't need to say "yes" to everything." - Gretchen Rubin

"Obligers can find accountability by thinking about their future self." - Gretchen Rubin

"It doesn't matter what you should be able to do, there's only what works for you." - Gretchen Rubin

"When a Rebel pairs up at work or in romance, it's almost always with an Obliger." - Gretchen Rubin

"The language we use leads to dramatically different results." - Gretchen Rubin

Gretchen's New Book: "The Four Tendencies"

Gretchen Rubin The Four Tendencies

During her multi-book investigation into understanding human nature, Gretchen Rubin realized that by asking the seemingly dry question "How do I respond to expectations?" we gain explosive self-knowledge. She discovered that based on their answer, people fit into Four Tendencies: Upholders, Questioners, Obligers, and Rebels. Our Tendency shapes every aspect of our behavior, so using this framework allows us to make better decisions, meet deadlines, suffer less stress, and engage more effectively.

More than 600,000 people have taken her online quiz, and managers, doctors, teachers, spouses, and parents already use the framework to help people make significant, lasting change.

With sharp insight, compelling research, and hilarious examples, The Four Tendencies will help you get happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative. It's far easier to succeed when you know what works for you.

128 Mind Pump: In a tech-driven world with more connection and media distraction than ever before, how can we balance these forces so they assist in our wellness journey?

JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST

This level of technology and social integration is still in its infancy, and we already see some of the physical and psychological impacts. Our constant distractions make it challenging to focus and enjoy the present moment, and the mainstream media constantly promotes fear and drama. Studies are also showing the links between mobile phone addiction with depression and anxiety.

These new technologies have far reaching benefits and also unintended consequences. It's the conscious choice of how we use and incorporate them into our lives that will dictate their impact.

In this highly digital and connected age, we have to ask ourselves an important question:

How can we develop a healthy use of technology so it enhances our productivity and wellness?

On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, we explore this topic and more with the team from Mind Pump Media, Sal Di Stefano, Adam Schafer, and Justin Andrews.  We touch on great topics such as the future of group exercise, the benefits of getting in nature, and how to increase our emotional intelligence.

Listen To Episode 128 As We Uncover:

  • Sales stories from 24-hour fitness
  • Mistakes made by beginner trainers
  • Interview styles and how they prep for shows
  • The rapid speed at which technology is changing the world and our habits
  • The addictive properties of technology
  • How apps and social media are engineered to get us hooked
  • How new forms of stimulation chemically alter the brain
  • Why mindfulness will dictate our habits
  • How the ego thrives and survives off drama and negativity
  • Predictions for the future of Virtual Reality
  • How we can stop identifying with thoughts that don't empower us
  • Creating sustainable change by getting in touch with our true motives
  • How our diet can affect skin care
  • Why we need to partition time for self-care
  • The unhealthy ways we choose to numb ourselves from problems
  • Why we must avoid getting stuck in a single workout routine
  • Finding the balance between intense and relaxing workouts
  • The rejuvenating effects of spending time in nature
  • How the fitness space is beginning to gamify workouts

Top 3 Takeaways From The Episode

  • Our ego loves to feed into drama and negativity.  Unfortunately, the media is made up of 99% bad news.  We have to understand that our consumption drives the creators, and what we consume is what they produce.  Try to fill your mind with positive content that shows us what is possible.
  • We can find tremendous emotional healing when we stop identifying with our thoughts.  Slow down and try to observe, without letting your mind consume you or become who you are.
  • Exercise has to be viewed as an investment in our health.  When we put the time in, we get exponential hours of energy and productivity back.  Partition out time on a regular basis for self-care.

The man who courageously stepped up to the plate for this conversation, is my dear friend, Josh Trent. Josh is the founder of Wellness Force, and a wellness industry influencer and coach. He is also a top ranked iTunes podcast host of both Wellness Force Radio and the Fitness + Technology podcasts.

With over 13 years in the health and wellness industry, he leads the Wellness Force community in discovering physical and emotional intelligence to help men and women live life well, and enjoy the process. In our fast paced and demanding world where the ability to pivot and transition every day is a necessity, how do we move past what Psychologists call "Impostor Syndrome" to conquer the deeper fears of not being enough?

JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST

Impostor Syndrome is a concept that describes individuals who are marked by an inability to realize their accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a "fraud." This way of thinking causes us to dismiss our accomplishments and abilities, feeling they may have occurred from luck, circumstance, or having deceived others into thinking we're someone other than our true selves.

To some extent, everyone is ingrained with this mental noise that can tell us we're not good enough or don't belong. Our mind often wonders what may happen if people find out we're not as intelligent as they think. These thoughts can be the loudest when pursuing a goal or passion, and the fear of exposing ourselves as a failure can limit exploration and destroy the courage needed to delve into new experiences.

To overcome these limiting and destructive thought processes, it's necessary to ask ourselves an important question:

How can we move past Impostor Syndrome to develop our power, awareness, and take action in the direction of our true desires?

On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, we explore this topic and much more with Ella Lucas-Averett, Host of the "On Air With Ella" Podcast. During this interview, she discusses techniques to move past our fears and find greater alignment in our lives.

Listen To Episode 127 As Ella Uncovers:

  • Why she felt a calling to spread the message of health and wellness
  • The importance of taking complete accountability in our lives
  • How to start where we are, use what we have, and do what we can
  • Why the path towards success isn't a linear journey
  • How to make sure impostor syndrome doesn't stop us from pursuing the things we desire
  • The power that comes from being authentic
  • Triggers that can amplify impostor syndrome
  • How we can take an emotional inventory and find our authentic voice
  • Ways to turn fear into curiosity
  • How to determine if something isn't in alignment with our true selves
  • How thoughts are manufactured around events, situations, and circumstances
  • The importance of taking complete accountability in our relationships
  • Why taking action won't always be fun and comfortable
  • How we can use visualization to overcome our fears
  • The tools that help us move through impostor syndrome

Top 3 Takeaways From Ella

  • In order to take more control over our lives, it's necessary to develop radical accountability with our thoughts, emotions, and actions.
  • We must choose to manufacture powerful thoughts if we are to move past our fears and find greater alignment.
  • There is strength in vulnerability and letting our authentic selves shine through to the world. Trying to project an image of perfection can hold us back from finding our deeper calling.

Power Quotes From Ella

"I don't see any point in trying to project some image of perfection." - Elizabeth Lucas-Averett

"If fear could have killed you, it would have by now." - Elizabeth Lucas-Averett

"Our confusion stems from a lack of consciousness." - Elizabeth Lucas-Averett

"We can live in the past or focus on the possibilities." - Elizabeth Lucas-Averett

"It's not about shame and blame, it's about choice and power." - Elizabeth Lucas-Averett

"The antidote to fear is taking action." - Elizabeth Lucas-Averett

"Perfection is fear with different clothes on." - Elizabeth Lucas-Averett

"Motivation is on the other side of action." - Elizabeth Lucas-Averett

HRV - With the chronic stress and multitude of health conditions in our modern world, it can be extremely beneficial to understand how Heart Rate Variability can optimize our wellness and bring the autonomic nervous system into better balance.

JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the change in time between successive heart beats, and these small variations occur in response to internal and external events.

These fluctuations are directly linked to our autonomic nervous system which helps to control our bodies unconscious processes. By tracking these variations, we can better understand our nervous systems, cardiovascular systems, and respiratory systems, and how our bodies are able to respond to many of life’s stressors that have a massive impact on our wellness.

By tracking these unique variations over time, we can better understand the signals we receive from our body. In just 30-60 days using HRV, this can lead an increase in our ability to recognize and better manage life’s stressors.

If we want to use this HRV data to truly improve our physical and emotional intelligence, we get to ask ourselves an important question:

How can a prime biomarker like HRV practically improve how we manage our emotions, stress, burnout, and decrease our risk for many of today's common ailments?

On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, we explore this topic and much more with Jason Moore, CEO of Elite HRV. During this interview, Jason discusses the importance of monitoring our HRV, and his non-evasive tracking tool that will help us gain insight into this important biomarker and how we can use it to fuel our health journey.

  • Open Enrollment: HRV - How HRV relates to optimal wellness
  • His transition from the oil industry to the health technology space
  • Why he feels HRV is such an important piece of data to track
  • How we can better understand if we are moving in the direction towards better health
  • How to avoid long periods of troubleshooting and assist in developing our intuition with wearable technology
  • The ancestral origins of the "Greek Physician's Pulse Watch"
  • How we can better maintain our energy, digestion, mental clarity, and stress response
  • Why our health plans need to be individualized
  • How monitoring HRV helps us gain insight into the functionality of our autonomic nervous system
  • Why some people may be more inclined to build aerobic fitness
  • Using HRV for increasing our emotional intelligence
  • Why we receive the most accurate measurement of HRV shortly after waking up
  • How we can use HRV to receive indications of possible health issues
  • The physical and mental impact on children that live in stressful home environments
  • How tech can provide us with the data and proof we may need to adjust our behavior
  • Reasons we should use tech instead of relying solely on our intuition
  • How this technology can show warning signs of underlying stress
  • Micronutrients and supplements that influence HRV
  • How our micronutrient intake affects our HRV
  • Learning to better regulate our levels of stress
  • His future goals and plans for Elite HRV
  • How stimulation from media is affecting our health

Top 3 Takeaways From Jason Moore

  • We can sometimes spend years trying to develop our wellness intuition. We can speed up this process if we learn the proper ways to track and analyze our biological data through different forms of wellness tech.
  • Extreme exercise might make us "better" at certain activities, but this may be at the expense of other parts of our wellness.  Technology can help us know when to slow down so we don't jeopardize important areas of our health.
  • HRV can give us incredible insight into other areas of our wellness and how our body functions.  We don't need massive amounts of tracking with HRV, 5 minutes a day for a couple weeks can give us great insight into how we can adjust our lifestyle to improve our wellness.

Power Quotes From Jason

"There is nothing more priceless than your own body and mind." - Jason Moore

"HRV is like our individual fingerprint for stress tolerance, adaptability, and resiliency." - Jason Moore

"We can get pretty good at most things if we have the right kind of individualized plan."- Jason Moore

"Tracking HRV can amplify our self-awareness." - Jason Moore

"No matter where we are on the scale of intuition, we can use technology to hone our senses." - Jason Moore

"The body is quite resilient if we give it the tools that it needs to manage stress." - Jason Moore

"HRV has been shown to correlate with our biological age." - Jason Moore

"Inundating people with more data than they need is a source of stress in and of itself." - Jason Moore

"HRV is the most accurate non-evasive measure of your autonomic nervous system." - Jason Moore

Craig Ramsay is here to show us that we no longer have to stress out over an intense workout regimen, and that building our physical and emotional fitness can be a fun and enjoyable process.

JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST

It's no secret that exercise can be overwhelming when we go into it with the all-or-nothing mentality. This approach can lead to health activities that don't resonate with us emotionally and cause us to quit when we don't attain certain fitness goals. We can avoid this situation by finding fun and healthy ways to improve our fitness no matter where we are, and by building more excitement and laughter into the process.

When we engage in workouts that really light us up inside and let go of the stress that comes with always having to be perfect, we are going to thrive emotionally, become healthier, and transform our physique.

The Importance of Posture

Most people are unaware of their poor posture and movement habits, and this can have a greater impact on our health than we realize.

We don't have to seek out a yoga or pilates class to improve our posture and ability to stretch.  We can start to increase our awareness for how we move and better our bodies' alignment by using certain techniques right away.

Craig recommends that we picture holding a washcloth in the back part of our armpit.

Simply doing this is going to help us elevate the chest, push the shoulders back and down, and allow us to breathe better and fuel our bodies with more oxygen.

This improvement in our posture will help us move throughout our day with intention, intensity, and purpose.

Stretch: A Reason To Wine

Craig Ramsay Stretch With Wine

When Craig trained the women from the hit TV show on Bravo, "The Real Housewives," they allowed him to change their workouts and also their eating plans, but had 1 very serious stipulation:

He was not allowed to take away their wine!

Since Craig was a trained contortionist, ballet dancer, and stretching expert, he had no problem coming up with a fun way to incorporate the ladies' love for wine and his love for stretching and moving the body.

Craig knew about the scientific research showing that minimal amounts of wine can have benefits to our health and also chemically improve our ability to stretch.  That is when his new exercise class was born:

Stretch - A Reason To Wine!

His class includes a 5 wine tasting flight, which he pairs together with a stretch that matches the taste and experience of each wine.  He finds his participants feeling great, becoming more comfortable in a social fitness environment, and having a wonderful time in the process.

  • He shows us how we can have a life, live a life, and look incredible all the while

In today's fast paced society driven by the "hustle and grind" mentality, sleep is usually the first thing to go. With the demands of the modern world, what practical steps for sleep hygiene can we practice every day to get the most emotional, physical, and spiritual fulfillment we need to live life well?

Everyone knows that a good night's sleep will make us feel better, but science is showing the impacts from chronic sleep deprivation are more far-reaching than we realize. • The first prerequisite to improving our sleep is to understand the value and benefits it will add to our lives.

About Dr. Parsley

Dr. Kirk Parsley image

Kirk Parsley served as an Undersea Medical Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group One from June 2009 to January 2013. While there, he led the development and supervised the group’s first Sports Medicine Rehabilitation center. He is a former SEAL, and received his Medical Degree from Bethesda, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in 2004. He interned in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Balboa Naval Hospital San Diego in 2005 and subsequently completed a Navy residency in Hyperbarics and Diving Medicine in 2006.

Doctor Parsley has been a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006 and has served as Naval Special Warfare’s expert on Sleep Medicine. In addition, he is certified in hormonal modulation (Age-Management Medicine). After leaving the Navy he went into concierge medicine and consulting. He continues to consult for multiple corporations, and professional athletes/teams. Doctor Parsley lectures worldwide on sleep, wellness, and hormonal optimization and is currently completing a book on sleep and health optimization.

His philosophy for wellness is simple; in order to optimize our health and get the most out of our bodies and minds, we must live more closely to the way we evolved as a species. He believes that many diseases and disorders that we accept as “inevitable” in modern society are unnecessary complications of poor sleeping habits, living in a toxic environment, eating foods we were not designed to digest, and allowing stress to overwhelm us. His passion is to help his patients and clients achieve the highest quality of life possible, and realize their health, performance, and longevity goals.

From the apps that track our sleep and movement to the genetic testing that can help us design the ideal eating plan, our world is filled with powerful tools to quantify our lives.

It's fascinating that we can monitor so many aspects of our lifestyle and utilize various tools to accelerate our health and healing, but we also must ask a very important question:

With advances in our digital world, how exactly do we use these new technologies to ensure long-term health and behavior change?

On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, we explore this topic and much more with Justin Andrews Founder of AXON, Co-Founder of Mind Pump Media, and Yaron Hadad, the Co-Creator and Chief Science Officer of Nutrino.

During this exclusive, in-person interview in San Jose at the Mind Pump Studio, we discuss how to cross the bridge between having the data and tools and knowing what to do with them.

With the volume of noise in our modern world that distracts and arouses the egoic mind, how do we awaken more consciousness so we can discover our deeper purpose?

We often fall prey to short-term solutions like drugs, alcohol, or social media to cover up the real feelings and desires we hold in our heart. While these mental and emotional band-aids make us feel better in the moment, they don't actually get to root of the deeper issue.

If we want to get in touch with our true inner voice and find greater meaning and fulfillment, we get to ask a profound question:

How can we shift our consciousness and overcome the allure of the egoic mind's temporary band-aids to powerfully show up and own the day?

The truth is that no matter what narrative the monkey mind tells us, we are all powerful beyond measure.

As we explore the depths of this physical and emotional intelligence on the Wellness Force and Wellness Force Friday podcasts, a common theme for all of us on the wellness journey is what type of message we tell ourselves when life is hard.

A message that can either be based on love and abundance or in fear, tension, and scarcity.

JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST

At the end of the day, it's no surprise that the "choice of the voice" comes from us and us alone. You’re probably thinking, “ah, hello, well duh, I know this.” But in this modern life, knowledge is simply not enough. It's embodying that knowledge to show up powerfully in our thoughts and actions that are most important when we get triggered.

So then, what is the actual thing, or many things, that really stand in our way?

One could say that it’s memories from our past, childhood traumas, or just things that happen "to us" instead of "for us," but the reality is that in the exact same moment of tension or fear, the exact opposite potential also exists.

A potential where in that exact same second we can choose to step into our power. Not in some kumbaya-mystic-spiritual-bypassing kind of a way, but in a way where we decide to take that first and sometimes scary step into believing in our deepest core that we are powerful beyond measure.

This truth of duality is 20 times more powerful than any nutrition program or CrossFit workout, and this is why today on the podcast you're hearing from Stephanie Quinn, a functional athlete and lifestyle coach for one of the most powerful wellness Force Friday shows to date.

Today's show is about knowing and embodying our truth.

As Marianne Williamson says:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us."

Embodying An Attitude of Gratitude

Stephanie: "Be aware of thy self and take action to make improvements and check your results. Awareness > Action > Adjustment (improvement, course correction). If you can use that for everything in your life you'll be successful. If you can be good at those steps you'll live well.

It is, of course, easy to think positive thoughts when you're feeling positive.

The real challenge comes in achieving positive flow when you aren't feeling that way. Giving in to gratitude is one of the most important personal characteristics that any human can have. Mountains of research prove that gratitude is a significant part of our happiness and success in life. Being grateful that the challenge is being presented because we know it's going to make us a better person, and looking at it like a puzzle we know can be solved allows us to see challenges as opportunities to grow."

The Power of Choice

Stephanie: "We look at physical, nutritional, and mental fitness as equal parts of the whole. Many of us look at fitness with a focus on the body (how we move, how we look). Some people include nutrition in that definition because nutrition is used to build, fuel and repair our bodies. But not enough of us consider the mind when we are looking at our overall fitness. Our mind powers everything. It makes things both possible and impossible.

And, it is up to you to choose.

I check in on that frequently and I think there is always a somewhat varied response. In simple terms, again, wellness for me boils down to how I feel. I ask myself in the morning, first thing, "how do I feel?'

What is sore, am I tired, what types of messages is my brain sending me, what do I need to do today to achieve wellness? When I wake up each morning: how was yesterday, what was great about it and what wasn't? I adjust. Do I feel good about myself, my partner, and do I feel healthy and that I'm being my best? That is wellness to me - Awareness.

I believe in the ABB's - Always Be Better.

All of the information I share is great in concept but there isn't any value if those ideas are not being implemented."

If you want to take action on some of this today - right now - go to ibreakground.com and accept the challenge in three parts:

  1. Mental
  2. Nutritional
  3. Physical

You can choose one, two, or do all three parts. No better place than here, no better time than now.

"The real challenge comes in achieving positive flow when you aren't feeling that way." - @FitGirlATX

While innovations in the food and shipping industries have made food more available, there have been unintended consequences that have come from this convenience. Not only has the way we process food damaged the nutritional integrity but the time it takes for food to reach our plates is diminishing the health benefits we once received.

How do we find the style of eating that will increase our nutrient intake and have the greatest impact on our physical and emotional wellness?

It's no secret that the current condition of our toxic world makes it challenging to build sustainable health and avoid disease. This is also largely due to the fact that our soil and plants don't contain the same nutritional potency they once did.

JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST

Even with a clean diet and healthy lifestyle, many people are still subjected to an extreme amount of toxic build-up.  Much of the problem stems from unhealthy soils, polluted waters, and foods that have lost so much of their nutrient density.

The time has come to ask ourselves a very important question:

How can we create sustainable health while being faced with unsustainable environmental and agricultural condition?

On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, we explore this topic with Dr. David Minkoff, founder of Body Health. He shows us the tools and strategies we need to maintain optimum health in today's increasingly toxic world.

Detoxification Should Be A Lifestyle

In recent decades, the occasional 1 week or 30-day detox plan may have been sufficient for cellular cleanup. However, the increasing amount of toxins we are now exposed to calls for a more continuous approach.

If we want to remove this waste from our bodies and build better wellness, detoxing has to be viewed as a lifestyle.

To cleanse these excess toxins that lead to unwanted health effects, we now must aid the body in their removal. This can be achieved in a few ways like making sure we sweat outside or in the sauna, adding detoxifying foods into our diets, and using proper supplementation.

Listen To Episode 121 As Dr. Minkoff Uncovers:

  • How to build sustainable health given the poor conditions of the environment.
  • What may be causing such a massive increase in autism and childhood cancer.
  • The dangerous effects of heavy metal toxicity.
  • Ways to avoid excess toxins and remove them from the body.
  • How to remedy an amino acid deficiency.
  • The pervasive issues that stem from poor gut health.
  • Why detoxing should be an ongoing part of our diet and lifestyle.
  • Why women should detox before pregnancy.
  • How to maintain healthy levels of testosterone.
  • How the body prioritizes the use of nutrients.
  • Ways we can address a protein deficiency in the body.
  • How we can influence our genetic expression through lifestyle.
  • Why having a strong and clear life purpose can help us build sustainable health.

Top 3 Takeaways From The Show

  • Detoxification needs be a continuous part of our lifestyle. The current state of our environment and agricultural system are so polluted, that we have to take consistent actions to aid or bodies in the removal of toxins.
  • It's important to make sure we consume adequate amounts of the essential amino acids, as well as provide our body what it needs to properly produce the non-essential.
  • We have to figure out the health needs for our individual bodies and adjust our diet and lifestyle accordingly.

Power Quotes From Dr. Minkoff

"Use safe storage materials so unwanted toxins won't enter your food." - Dr. David Minkoff

"The increasing amount of toxins we are now exposed to calls for a more continuous approach for detoxing our bodies." - Dr. David Minkoff

"People have to be more intelligent about how we treat our bodies if our species is to survive and thrive." - Dr. David Minkoff

"We have to figure out our individual health abnormalities, then adjust our lifestyle and nutrition to meet those needs." - Dr. David Minkoff

"It's really important to eat well, exercise, and have a strong life purpose to help other people."  - Dr. David Minkoff

"We have to take extra precautions to build sustainable health in such a toxic world." - Dr. David Minkoff

So our brains and guts have an incredibly powerful connection. So powerful in fact that with the right nutrition, we can use foods to heal our brain, and to energize, and invigorate our nervous system.

But if our lifestyle becomes filled with processed foods full of artificial ingredients, refined carbohydrates, and sugar, over time our brains begin to face an energy crisis.

Even if Alzheimer's doesn't run in your family, this episode is full of great advice for preventing disease and keeping a healthy mind, for life.

Food itself is not a cure for metabolic problems or chronic neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. However, if we eat more nutritious foods with plenty of B12 vitamins, healthy fats, and clean non-CAFO sources of animal protein, we can begin to understand their connection towards easing the symptoms of Alzheimer's, brain fog, and dementia for so many millions of people out there who suffer.

Early Prevention of Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's has been referred to as Type 3 Diabetes because those who have it also tend to have very high insulin levels.

In a regular blood test, our insulin and glucose levels may appear normal when they're really not at all. To find out our insulin levels, we should specifically ask for a fasting insulin test from a doctor.

We can improve our insulin levels with a short term boost with intranasal insulin. However, we can't solely rely on short term fixes to help our brain.

Rather than turning to insulin treatment, we should be focusing on resensitizing the blood brain barrier. Even if someone is a carrier of the ApoE4 gene, that doesn't mean that they'll automatically have Alzheimer's some day. If we can begin to make lifestyle changes as early as in our 30s and 40s, we might be able to evade triggering the gene.

We also have to consider other factors that can lead to Alzheimer's and dementia such as the side effects from anesthesia or physical trauma to the brain

Daily Exercise

We don't have to train or push ourselves to compete in marathons in order to have a healthy mind. Regular cardio, lifting weights, or even simple exercises like walking can keep our brains strong.

The Ketogenic Diet

A low-carb, high-fat diet such as the Ketogenic Diet is not a miracle cure to end Alzheimer's. However, it has been proven that there are noticeable, subjective and objective measurable differences and improvements in the brain when following this diet.

The Importance of the B12 Vitamin

Besides having high insulin levels, many Alzheimer's patients are also deficient in the B12 vitamin

The B12 vitamin is extremely important because it can help our brains function properly and transport messages via neurons. Unfortunately, even if we do eat plenty of foods that have the B12 vitamin, prescription antacids can inhibit our ability to absorb the nutrient. Too much follate can also mask our B12 numbers.

B12 deficiency can easily be mistaken for dementia because there are side effects that are irreversible.

A deficiency in the B12 vitamin might not only lead to dementia, but it can also trigger memory loss, confusion, or loss of balance. If it's very severe, we can experience feelings of numbness, tingling sensations, and cold extremities.

To ensure we have good B12 levels, we can add the following foods to our diet:

  • Red meat
  • Egg yolks
  • Fatty seafood
  • Shellfish
  • Lamb
  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Goat
  • Olive oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Nuts
  • Seeds

For vegetarians and vegans, some forms of algae or supplements can help.

Top 3 Takeaways From The Show

  • Alzheimer's is basically an energy crises in the brain. Neurons that are affected by Alzheimer's have lost their ability to gather energy from glucose and so they starve and shrivel up. When atrophy begins, the connections between the brain neurons are lost. That is when memory loss, clouded thinking, and personality changes can begin.
  • The brain is like a hybrid car and can run on different sources of energy. Besides glucose and fats, the brain can also run on ketones. Many people have seen great improvement in how their brain functions by following a low-carb, high fat diet such as the Ketogenic Diet. The brain will always need a little bit of glucose for energy, but we don't have to be eating glucose for that to happen. Through gluconeogenesis, our brains are able to turn amino acids and fats into the glucose that it needs to survive.
  • Whether or not we have the ApoE4 gene, it doesn't necessarily mean we will or won't develop a chronic neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer's. Several lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise also come into play. By keeping up with regular exercise and following a healthy diet, we can help our minds stay strong and sharp for many years.

Power Quotes From Amy Berger

[tweetthis]"Ketones are a fuel substrate that can act like an energy drink for the brain. They can be a short term boost." - @TuitNutrition [/tweetthis]

[spacer height="20px" id="2"]

  • "Alzheimer's is basically an energy crisis because it's a metabolic problem. By that it's a problem with how the brain is receiving metabolic energy. When your body gets tired, you can be sluggish, cranky, or clumsy and maybe you make mistakes that you don't normally make. So, when the brain doesn't have enough energy, it does the same." - Amy Berger on why Alzheimer's is an energy crisis for the brain.
  • "Many people who have Alzheimer's are also insulin resistant and therefore have very high insulin.  That's why Alzehimer's is now often referred to as Type 3 Diabetes. " - Amy Berger on Alzheimer's and insulin resistance in the brain.
  • "Alzheimer's itself is not a rapid onset disease. Nobody wakes up one day with Alzheimer's disease. This is something that builds over the course of decades which is why it's so important to be pro-active." - Amy Berger on how Alzheimer's can  develop overtime.
  • "Brain fog is an acute, short term indicator of some type of energy problem in your brain. It's helpful to keep an eye on your blood sugar which you can easily do at home with a glucometer." - Amy Berger on how brain fog can be an indicator that your brain is lacking the energy it needs and how to measure it.
  • "ApoE4 does not cause Alzheimer's, but it does raise your susceptibility to developing it. The most important thing is to get rid of the refined carbohydrates and grains. Focus on eating more fatty seafood, shellfish, lots of healthy fat like olive oil, avocado oil, nuts and seeds or good quality animal protein like lamb, beef, goat, or  pork." - Amy Berger on the ApoE4 gene and what foods to eat to avoid triggering that gene.

About The Alzheimer's Antidote by Amy Berger

Amy Berger: The Alzheimer's Antidote WELLNESS FORCE RADIO PODCAST EPISODE 119A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in 2016 is startlingly similar to a half-century ago. Despite decades of research and millions of dollars invested in uncovering the causes and developing treatments for this devastating illness, progress has been slow, with each new “blockbuster” drug proving to be as big a disappointment as the ones that went before it. Today, an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is a death sentence.

However, there may be ways to prevent, delay, and possibly even reverse the course of this crippling neurodegenerative disease. In The Alzheimer’s Antidote, Certified Nutrition Specialist Amy Berger presents a multi-pronged nutrition and lifestyle intervention to combat Alzheimer’s disease at its roots. Berger’s research shows that Alzheimer’s results from a fuel shortage in the brain: As neurons become unable to harness energy from glucose, they atrophy and die, leading to classic symptoms like memory loss and behavioral changes.

This is a revolutionary approach―one that has been discussed in the scientific literature for years but has only recently been given credence in clinical settings, thanks to extremely promising studies wherein Alzheimer’s patients have experienced complete reversals of the condition. Medical and scientific journals are full of research showing alternate ways to fuel the starving brain, but no one has been bringing this essential information to the people who need it most―until now.

In a culture obsessed with miracle medications, the pharmaceutical route for tackling Alzheimer’s has been a massive failure. Pills and potions don’t address underlying causes, and regarding Alzheimer’s, they typically fail to improve even the symptoms. As a metabolic problem, the only effective way to treat Alzheimer’s may be a multifaceted approach that fundamentally reprograms energy generation in the brain. The good news is, the secret is as simple as switching to a low-carb, high-fat diet.

The Alzheimer’s Antidote shows us that cognitive decline is not inevitable, but if it does occur, we don’t have to sit idly by and wait helplessly while it progresses and worsens. Amy Berger empowers loved ones and caregivers of Alzheimer’s sufferers, and offers hope and light against this otherwise unnavigable labyrinth of darkness.
