Do you intuitively know that in order for your health to rise to the next level you first must break your bad habits? Today's guest, Nir Eyal, helps companies create behaviors that benefit their users, while educating people on how to build healthy habits in this busy modern world.

Nir Eyal is a best-selling author, speaker, and behavior change jedi-master that is educating people on how to build healthy habits in their own lives.

He writes for TechCrunch, Forbes, Psychology Today, and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and Fortune 500 companies.

As the author of Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products Nir has taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Design School on practical insights to create user habits that stick.

Are You Addicted To Technology?

How do successful companies create products people can’t put down?

Why do some products capture widespread attention while others flop? What makes us engage with certain products out of sheer habit?

Is there a pattern underlying how technologies hook us?

Nir Eyal answers these questions (and many more) by explaining the Hook Model—a four-step process embedded into the products of many successful companies to subtly encourage customer behavior.

Through consecutive “hook cycles,” these products reach their ultimate goal of bringing users back again and again without depending on costly advertising or aggressive messaging.

Why We Do What We Do

With technology growing exponentially, it is no surprise that the waterfall of apps, wearables, and the internet of things have become a double-edged sword in our world.

On one hand, technology has given rise to advances in human connection, expression, and productivity, while on the other, without mindfulness and intention, it can harm the most important thing we have: our health and wellness.

To balance the demands of this attention-grabbing technology while still maintaining our vitality and well-being, Nir's new book profoundly uncovers the how, why, and what makes this addictive technology, well, addictive.

Behavior Change

Nir's blog is about the intersection of psychology, technology, and business. He calls it “behavioral design.” The topics at Nir's blog encompass user experience, behavioral economics, and a dash of neuroscience.

Since 2003, Nir has sold two technology companies and now help teams design more engaging products. For most of his career he has worked in the video gaming and advertising industries where he learned, applied (and at times rejected) the techniques used to motivate and manipulate users.

His life's work in behavioral design has flourished from his writing, speaking, and consulting by helping companies create behaviors that benefit their users, while educating people on how to build healthy habits (and breaking bad habits) in this busy modern world.

  • What is the biggest obstacle for optimal brain performance
  • How to recognize if an adult has ADHD
  • How adult ADHD causes a lack of commitment in men
  • How ADHD lowers sex drive
  • How Tylenol and Acetaminophen can cause ADHD

  • One out of nine American students seriously contemplate suicide every year
  • Statistics reveal a greater risk of ADHD in children of divorced parents, particularly when boys are missing the regular influence of their fathers or their mothers are unable to find happiness

The Hero's Journey

John's story is powerful beyond words. From his site, we find an incredible hero's journey through thresholds of being celibate for 9 years while traveling with the Maharishi Mahesh, sleeping on a beach homeless with two college degrees, to becoming the most sought after relationship expert in the world and writing the best selling book of all time. More from John's story page below:

"In 1978, John’s brother asked him for help from a mental hospital. His brother had suffered from bipolar disorder and he was struggling to find happiness. John had encouraged meditation for him in the past but it did not help. So John left the Transcendental Meditation movement and Maharishi and returned to the United States to try to help his brother get out of depression.

John ended up in Los Angeles, California hoping to find the cure for his brother’s bipolar disorder. Los Angeles had become a hot bed of new therapies like Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Neuro-linguistic programming, Hypnosis, Scientology, Primal Scream, EST, insight Seminars, Rebirthing and Loving Relationship Trainings. But first he had to find a place to sleep.

John was homeless and living primarily on a beach in Santa Monica. He spent his days at part time jobs and reading psychology books in the public library. “I had 2 degrees but not much work experience on my resume. I was good at meditating for hours, teaching yoga and living simply with peace of mind,“ remembers John, "But those things couldn't pay all the bills back then." Every couple days, John saved enough money for a hotel room where he could take a shower and sleep in a bed. But most nights were spent on the beach.

John recalls one night sitting by a fire on the beach with a dozen other homeless men, trying to teach them about God and their true purpose in life. “They said to me, ‘John, we love listening to you, but we have no idea what you’re talking about.’ I knew I was in the wrong place and need to move on. This was definitely not my audience,” recalls John......"

Positive Affirmations

Born with a possible life-threatening port wine stain birthmark, Angela was bullied throughout her childhood. Fortunately, Angela was raised by loving and encouraging parents, so that at home, she never felt any different than others. With this love and encouragement as a backdrop, she grew to learn how to have empathy for others by becoming kinder to herself

Angela says, “You can be your own best friend or your worst enemy. Remind yourself constantly of how amazing you are."

She suggests putting up “I AM” signs everywhere, so you're reminded to be the best version of yourself every day.

Listen As Angela Uncovers

  • How moms can understand what their kids need, and that you don’t have to be a nutritionist to lead them into health and wellness.
  • The need to ask the right questions and understanding exactly what is happening to your body
  • Looking within and knowing that wellness is a process; you can’t achieve optimum health in one day
  • Being specific about what you want to happen with your life, in terms of health and wellness
  • Helping moms de-stress and reconnect with their authentic self

Don't Get Fancy

Angela suggests working on meeting basic nutrition and hydration. You don’t need to be a nutritionist or a chef to deliver the best care for the ones you love. All is you need to do is understand what your body needs and how it reacts to the things you feed it.

Think of long-term goals because truth be told, wellness is a process. As Angela puts it, you can’t expect to lose weight all of a sudden if you eat a single apple today. It takes time and effort and patience - and of course, consistency.

Wellness Is Happiness

Being grateful is the key to unlocking a life of wellness. Angela states you'll know you’ve achieved wellness when there is a vibrant energy that flows through you. You don’t have to be the richest, the fanciest, or the best - you just have to be at peace and at home with who you are and what you have.

Moms have the most difficult time dealing with this; especially because of societal pressure - and Angela wants to remind all mothers out there that you are not alone and that you have support.

On this episode we're diving deep into the broth of edu-tastement! Chef Lance Roll takes us through a journey about the story behind the healing powers of bone broth and how it has been revolutionizing the health and wellness industry for the past couple of years.

Heal, With Bone Broth!

The Flavor Chef, Lance Roll, has been cooking professionally for 25 years. His career started in 1998 when he joined the team with Chef Mark Strausman at Sapore Di Mare in New York. He spent 2.5 years there learning classical European cooking principals and Tuscan Cuisine.

Heal Your Gut, Heal Your Immune System

Armed with the knowledge of the body’s natural healing capacity and being a lifelong student of food, Chef Lance Roll comes in and brings us why and how bone broth aids in repairing our bodies and leading us toward holistic health and wellness.

He stands firmly behind bone broth as he himself has gone through an amazing transition, going through his personal path of healing his own health issues.

Listen As Chef Lance Uncovers

  • The healing transition he went through after he discovered the power of bone broth
  • Being Paul Chek’s student and personal chef
  • His favorite books from health and wellness experts who swear by the healing properties of bone broth
  • How bone broth can actually reduce protein intake for people
  • Organic, grass-fed animals where bone broth should be taken from and the process it takes to get certified
  • His morning routine, which I also do - and you should also be doing!

The Bone Broth Process

Chicken soup and bone broth isn’t just good for the soul: there’s a reason that it’s prescribed by doctors and mothers alike when you’re feeling under the weather.

All bone broths: beef, chicken, fish, lamb and more are staples in the traditional diets of every culture because bone broths are nutrient-dense, easy to digest, rich in flavor and–they boost the body’s ability to heal.

Chef Lance Roll takes us through the process by which bone broth is made, and how long the certain process takes. Bone broth can be done at home or obtained from external sources - but we have to make sure we get them from certified organic suppliers and that the animals were treated without cruelty.

B.R.O.T.H.: Blessed Return Of Traditional Healing

Your body doesn’t recognize chemicals; it recognizes food.

Chef Lance is a big believer in using food as a healing modality, and he talks about how our bodies don’t really react to the chemicals in the things we eat.

He goes back to the traditional way of cooking - prep it, cook it, eat it. There is an emphasis here on the importance of authentic food - food that can actually be recognized by the body, and therefore can be digested and used for healing and repair.

Scott Colby, also known as the fitness industry's "Abs Expert" is a fitness coach, entrepreneur, and the host to the Power To Change podcast.

Scott brings on the most inspirational stories from people who have transformed their minds, bodies and lives to find out what gives people the power to overcome obstacles and make changes so they can live with more passion and purpose.

With a background in medical research, Scott had ample knowledge of the way our bodies work, making his transition into health and fitness an easy one. He has helped numerous people with his accountability groups and coaching programs - and he’s not about to stop just yet.

WHY ACCOUNTABILITY MATTERS

Growing up, Scott always had a problem with his body image and was the kind of guy who refused to take off his shirt at the pool or beach.

He just didn’t feel good about it. Over time, he realized it was important to create a change and embrace that change.

But stating a goal is different from actually doing it and having someone take a look at it - not because of the need for validation, but because one needs to be pushed toward the direction he needs to take. Sometimes, we are our own worst enemy and that’s what accountability is for. To motivate us to reach the end goal.

Scott emphasized that end goals should be for the purpose of giving yourself a pat on the back and complimenting yourself for a job well done - it is not for the affirmation.

LISTEN AS SCOTT TALKS ABOUT

  • His biochemical engineering education and previous work with medical research; he was featured in journals such as Spine and Gait and Posture
  • How he conceptualized and materialized the Her Strength Dallas Bootcamp
  • Words that we should take out of our vocabulary to enhance our mindset
  • The three habits he does to ensure wellness, both in body and mind
  • Having the ultimate power of choice!

The Gratitude Challenge

There are those times when we feel lost and almost incapable of getting up. Scott Colby reminds us to get up and be grateful - even for the smallest and most trivial things. Anchoring our gratitude to something we are already doing helps in reminding us to express it. Still having a tough time? Write down the things you are grateful for for 7 straight days! You may just pick up a habit.

Getting Fit For Photos Through Gratitude And Accountability

In his community, he has his members write down the things they are grateful for. You wouldn’t believe what he found out! Not only did the members enjoy writing down their gratitude, but they enjoyed reading others’ list more! He says it’s like a glimpse into other people’s lives!

What long term positive effects can nootropics give to our busy lives? Can new breakthroughs in cognitive neuroscience help us attain the focused state of attention to meet the demands of our busy modern world?

Andrew Hill, PhD, is a lecturer, scientist, explorer, and also the lead neuroscientist at TruBrain. Today on the show, Dr. Hill and I discuss everything from frontal lobes to biofeedback, and more.

Focused Attention

Improving focus and efficiency is the greatest weapon for ambitious people looking to accomplish more. In today’s connected 24/7 world, clocking more hours in the office no longer provides the same unique advantage that it used to.

To become more efficient, you first need to understand your equation for productivity. This equation starts with the human brain and how your brainwave states dictate your output. Because we measure brainwaves, we can actually quantify what happens in the brain when someone is in a focused state.

Want more focus? Use code "WELLFX" for 25% off all truBrain products

Cognitive Neuroscience

Dr. Hill holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from UCLA's department of Psychology and continues to do research on attention and cognitive performance. He is the Lead Neuroscientist for truBrain, an LA-based mental performance company, as well as the cofounder of Alternatives Addiction Treatment.

He lectures at UCLA, teaching courses in psychology, neuroscience, and gerontology, and has recently opened a peak brain performance center in Los Angeles named the Peak Brain Institute.

From a storied perspective, Dr. Hill’s road to being a neuroscientist has been the ultimate heroes journey: In the past, he’s worked on a farm, in technology sector, in mental health facilities, and many different previous careers that give him a unique understanding of how humans behave and what holds them back, and the science of how brain health can literally change lives.

Currently focused on developing tools and technologies to help everyday citizens enhance their cognitive performance outside of the lab---- as the lead neuroscientist at TruBrain, an LA-based mental performance company, Dr, Hill is the founding director of Alternatives Behavioral health AND the Alternatives Brain Institute.

On today's show, we're flipping the tables where I'm interviewed by JJ Flizanes on Wellness Force Radio where we discuss how to use new wellness technology in our busy modern lives to drive better results and breakthrough old (and sometimes even longstanding) weight and performance plateaus.

Using New Technology To Let Go of Old Weight

After attending #CES2016 in Las Vegas this month, it couldn't be more clear that when it comes to how wellness and fitness technology will help people through increased accountability, 2016 is the year we will all look back on and remember as a major turning point.

The current global market for wellness and fitness wearables is growing faster than expected. A recent study published by Forrester research shows one out of every five Americans now uses a wearable device.

President Barack Obama has even adopted the connected fitness lifestyle by proudly donning the Fitbit SURGE fitness watch in press photos while walking in the White House garden.

But when it comes to these exciting new technologies giving us new tools to fight against poor health, obesity, and sedentary living, one powerful question surfaces:

Who exactly are you and what are you trying to do?

Why Busy Moms Need More Than Just A Personal Trainer

The days of a busy parent couldn't be more full.

Learn More: Wellness Force Digital Health Coaching Group Starts 2/15

Companies around the world know this, and in turn, have been hard at work creating products in the health and wellness industry that are changing the game of balancing family, fitness, and responsibility with more ease for moms and dads.

In the past 100 years, men, women and children alike have all grown accustomed to using the tools yielded by rapidly growing technology around the pain point of wanting to be more and do more with and for the people they love.

Since the early 1900's, and especially since the advent of personal computing, the law of accelerating returns has proven to drive consumers not only to use machines and circuits to produce more economically, but also connect in ways never dreamed possible.

Now, in 2016 and the age of mass distractions and helicopter parenting, wearable and wellness technology are giving moms a fighting chance to stay on top of how they show up for their family by first tracking how the show up for themselves.

Wellness Tools

Fitbit – The dominant fitness tracker manufacturer is a four billion dollar company out of San Francisco named Fitbit. As the global leader of wearable devices, Fitbit has changed course in 2016 to point more towards the . Beyond simply counting steps, distance, heart rate and the number of hours slept, they are now positioning insights for corporate wellness programs to offer much more detailed and insightful analysis of activity and health.

Muse – As mindfulness and meditation both continue to grow in scientific efficacy for both stress reduction and lowering cortisol, people using quantified meditation devices like the Muse brain-sensing headband now have a way to encourage and track stress reduction practices for sustainable behavior change.

Smart Drugs: Are They Smart For You?

Jesse's podcast, Smart Drug Smarts, is for people who want to keep up on the latest breakthroughs in brain health and optimization and related areas of neuroscience.

On today's episode, Jesse explains the 7 types of cognitive enhancers, what and who nootropics are for, and shares a handful of fascinating stories about his own life and passion for optimizing the brain.

How To Build A Bulletproof Brain

Pronunciation aside, below are the 7 nootropics (cognitive enhancers) that we'll discuss on the show:

  • Racetams
    • speeds up chemical exchange between brain cells. Effects include increases in verbal learning, mental clarity, and general IQ.
  • Stimulants
    • psychostimulants, affects of caffeine and nicotine, and the more ill-reputed subclass of amphetamines.
  • Adaptogens
    • plant-derived chemicals whose activity helps the body maintain or regain homeostasis
  • Cholinergics
    • choline-based class of smart drugs play important cognitive roles in memory, attention, and mood regulation.
  • Seratonegenics
    • primary neurotransmitter and controls major features of the mental landscape including mood, sleep and appetite.
  • Dopaminergics
    • promotes attention and alertness by either increasing the efficacy of dopamine within the brain, or inhibiting the enzymes that break dopamine down
  • Metabolic Function Smart Drugs
    • provide mental benefits by generally facilitating the body's metabolic processes related to the production of new tissues and the release of energy from food and fat stores

The Three Must-Have Supplements For A Bulletproof Brain

In as difficult of an answer as it was with all the powerful and brain-boosting supplements out there, Jesse was kind enough to share the three supplements he never leaves home without (and two bonus)

Your Guide To A Mindful Life

Stacy Conlon, also known as The Zen Girl, is a Certified Wellness Coach and Mindfulness Facilitator who helps people transform stress into peace. A yoga and meditation practitioner for the past 15 years, she leads guided meditations and mindfulness sessions for startups and enterprise companies.

Stacy is also the Business Development Manager for the Lean Startup Training Program and Labs Summit Series. With more than 15 years experience in sales and marketing, her goal is to help startups and enterprise companies get the tools, training and exposure they need make their organizations more successful.

Doing the Work

Stacy's life wasn't always filled with deep breaths and peaceful sunrises. She's had to learn this practice by doing the work. Day after day, with her mindfulness and meditation practices, Stacy shares vulnerably about her dance with anxiety and feeling overwhelmed, and how having a foundation for her physical and emotional wellness is essentially what gives her more power, presence and energy in her busy life.

We talk a lot about wellness technology and behavior change on the show, so of course as the 2016 machine begins to unfold, there has never been a better (and more important) time to learn a new system of habits that can give us more energy when we need it the most.

In my own wellness journey, meditation has meant a world of difference; from the way I eat to the way I interact with others.

Even with the knowledge of all the potential energy found in the practice of meditation however, there is a natural resistance to sitting still in this busy fast paced world; it can be one of the most difficult things to do.

Doing nothing.

Just "being" a human being.

Whatever way you get there, know that finding a still and quiet space where it's just you and your breath doesn't have to be daunting and time consuming.

As Stacy will share, some of the most powerful meditative experiences can happen in less than just 5 minutes.

Worry Less, Live More

In working with clients, what comes up a lot is not having the time to meditate and it not being important. Paradoxically, what is hidden in the restorative power of mindfulness and meditation is transformation.

See this example from Stacy's blog:

"Most of us have had the experience of learning something new such as a sport, an instrument or a second language. In the beginning, it’s challenging and requires a lot of concentration. However, over time it becomes easier, requires less effort and you improve.

Mindfulness works in a similar way. We know from the latest neuroscience research that we have the ability to create new neural pathways in our brain. That means our brains can literally transform through experience.

Mindfulness is mental exercise — a workout for your brain. And like a muscle, these neural pathways get stronger and more effective over time. This leads to dozens of health benefits, including less worry, fear, anxiety and stress — the oftentimes root cause of unhappiness, illness and disease."

Listen as Stacy Uncovers

  • How to reduce stress and practice mindfulness and meditation in a busy world.
  • What little things can we do throughout our day to start practicing
  • How to create a culture of mindfulness
  • The future of wellness in the workplace
  • A morning routine that will change your life

Adam's Story: Practical Spirituality

"I came to the Paleo Community after a number of years of “Paleo” or “Ancestral” eating.

In 2004 I was extremely sick with Ulcerative Colitis and was nearly dead several times during that period. By 2008, I had proven to myself that the Medical Establishment was wrong and what I ate actually did have an effect on my digestive system’s health (Imagine that…).

After years and years of experimentation with a number of different approaches, I arrived at Paleo mostly by trial and error.

In 2008-2009, the Paleo community was large and visible enough – mostly thanks to CrossFit and Robb Wolf – that I was able to find my way full circle and embrace a Paleo lifestyle with a ton of Community support." - Adam Farrah

Using Practical Spirituality

In the age of over-information and radically packed family and work schedules, Adam has found personal and professional growth by using the power of what he calls "Quantum Evolution" in the vehicles of yoga, meditation, chakras, and tarots.

Beyond just paleo, Adam is shifting his focus in 2016 to begin integrating practical spirituality in coaching, speaking, writing, and in contribution to the wellness industry via his popular website. In episode 33, we discuss how Adam has used medical marijuana, practical spirituality, paleo dieting, and alternative healing to help overcome his own dependency to pharmaceuticals, depression and health issues to transform the way he works with clients.

A Winding Path Towards Wholeness

From Adam's Blog: "A Winding Path Toward Wholeness… It’s over 10 years ago now that I started down a path toward recovering my health and healing my life. It’s been a challenging and detour-filled journey. When one embarks on a path toward healing a whole life, there are very few stones left unturned and few ideas not explored – at least in a rudimentary way."

More About Adam:

  • B.S. in Chemistry Cum Laude from The University of Connecticut
  • IKFF Certified Kettlebell Teacher – Level 1
  • Apprentice Grappling Instructor under Harris International
  • CrossFit Level 1 Trainer with an array of other CrossFit Certifications (Powerlifting, Gymnastics, Strongman, Rowing, Running and Endurance)

Are You Interested In Changing Old Habits With New Technology?

Dec 6, 2015
Today's special guest is a true pioneer in digital health and wellness technology. As the CEO and co-founder of NudgeCoach.com, Mac Gambill has created a swell of momentum in creating digital tools that are driving the change we must see in the fitness and wellness industries.

Mac's company, Nudge Coach, is focused on helping health coaches turn their passion into a sustainable business through continuing education and a market-leading software platform. His platform combines data from health tracking apps with a streamlined notification and messaging system to enable coaches to better manage deeper connections with their clients.

In today's show, Mac uncovers how literally anyone with the desire to lose weight and change old habits now has a more powerful way to do so with this cutting edge new technology.

Changing Old Habits With New Technology

Beyond the weight loss stories of people losing over 100lbs with Nudge, his company is literally changing the landscape of how coaches and trainers are working with clients; finally closing the ever-widening gap in fitness between too much knowledge and too little execution.

I’ve mentioned previously on the podcast about our up and coming Digital Health Coaching groups where I’ve used Nudge to help my clients get results, and I’m excited today to have Mac share his insight and action steps to help uncover:
  • How we can change old habits with new technology
  • What your data says about your life
  • Why fitness industry is fundamentally broken and how digital health can save it
  • How coaches, nutritionists, trainers and health & wellness professionals can leverage this technology to grow

In an age of over-information, the modern day lifestyle now demands more that the current fitness industry can handle.

What frustrated me most as a pro trainer after working in gyms for 10 years was that I never really knew what my clients were doing in the 165 hours they weren’t in session with me.

In over 10,000 sessions as a fitpro, I eventually became burnt out with my clients not getting the results they deserved to have.

A New Paradigm

After stretching my coaching practice to include Group Training, Corrective Exercise, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, Metabolic Typing, and getting certified in handfuls of other fitness and wellness courses, I still intuitively felt that something was missing from my toolset:

Increased client accountability.

The one thing that coaching and training for over a decade has taught me, is that to have knowledge is one thing, but to execute on that knowledge is another.

On a higher level, the uncomfortable truth in the wellness and fitness industry today is that there is a massive gap between knowing what to do and having the system in place to actually do it.

This is where Digital Health Coaching has changed the playing field.

Personal Gold

After seeing the power of digital health applications and devices in late 2014 during a screening of the film "Personal Gold," I drove home with the seed planted for an ultimate coaching "ah-ha" moment.

On the way home that night, I thought about how the 2012 USA Olympic Women's Cycling team had won a silver medal using quantified self, digital health and mHealth.

Then, a lighting bolt shot through my brain:

I realized that the very same wellness technology that can help win medals for athletes has the ubiquitous power to help change poor health habits for regular people.

This began a 16 month journey in searching for the "dream ecosystem" where I'd be able to coach clients using the data their bodies created. After hunting, failing, and getting knocked down, I finally found a platform called "Nudge Coach" that changed my coaching and my business forever.

If you are a health coach, gym owner, fitness pro, nutritionist and this sounds like it could help grow your business and get your clients superior results, join me and Nudge for a free webinar about using digital health to grow your current practice.

What can the power of breath actually do for reducing stress in our busy society?

Can tracking our own breathing be a catalyst for new healthy behavior changes?

On today's show, we answers those powerful questions and more, with inventor and world-class expert in the design and study of technologies that promote healthy and high-performing states of mind, Dr. Neema Moraveji.

The Power of The Breath

Dr. Moraveji is co-founder and chief product officer of Spire, the first wearable to track and influence both activity and state of mind.

Early this year, I was fortunate enough to attend the 2015 Quantified Self Conference at Fort Mason center in San Francisco, where I met Dr. Neema and experienced his invention of a groundbreaking breath tracking and mindfulness technology device live and in person.

The results were shocking.

In just a few short minutes after working with Dr. Neema while using SPIRE, I felt the most relaxed I'd been all week.

Pretty amazing, especially when you consider that over 10 people were watching me in a crowded, loud and busy expo floor throughout the entire exercise!

Tracking Our Breath

Beyond just a wearable device, his invention SPIRE is literally transforming the way that wellness and fitness use breathing techniques, cues, and strategies for better health.

We understand that tracking steps and calories is the quantified self in real life action, but can the breath tell us powerful insights about our health and how we manage stress?

As director of Stanford University’s Calming Technology Lab, he studies how interactive products can mitigate the damaging and distracting effects of acute and chronic stress.

He teachers the popular “Designing Calm” at the Stanford Design School and his work has been covered in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and NPR among other esteemed publications. Dr. Moraveji is co-founder and chief product officer of Spire, the first wearable to track and influence both activity and state of mind.

Master Your Breathing

His TEDxBayArea talk "What Your Breath Is Telling You," Dr. Moraveji uncovers the way you breathe shows how much tension, calm, and focus you have in your life. He discusses how the millennia-year old science of respiratory psychophysiology can be leveraged today with wearable sensors to help us improve focus, reduce stress, and live with balance in daily life.

Dr. Neema received his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland at College Park and his M.S. from Carnegie Mellon University. He received his Ph.D., “Augmented Self-Regulation“, from Stanford University.

Listen As Dr, Neema Uncovers:

  • How new technology can help us in designing calm in our lives
  • The power of breath on weight loss, wellness, and health
  • How to discover what makes you calm and focused at work and at home

"Your state of mind influences your brain and cardiorespiratory system quite rapidly. Of all the biosignals effected, one of them can be consciously controlled to influence your state of mind – and that is respiration." - Dr. Neema Moraveji

On boxing day in 2013, Caitlin broke her back in an accident and burst the first vertebrae of her lower spine.

In the few weeks while she was in a full back brace, she grew nauseous from the medication, frustrated from the pain, and began to realize that she'd have to pull from deep inside herself to face the challenges of what would come next.

Not getting the advice and healing strategies she needed from traditional medicine, she decided to rely on her emotional strength and ultimately had to make a powerful choice:

Either be a victim or a victor of her circumstance.

Life After Injury

Thanks to the fracture type and her knowledge of the benefits of holistic medicine, she made a full recovery through dedication, hard work, and most importantly, the right mindset.

She reflected on all the patients she’d treated who had told her they felt alone, frustrated with their medication and had no idea how to start their road to recovery and wellness. She knew first-hand what it’s like to experience a road-block in your life, whether it be an injury, work stress, or lack of motivation.

Caitlin started Pilates one week later, and was at the gym every third day; also participating in a fun meditation and mindfulness class to help her overcome the frustration of having an injury (and wearing a very hot brace in the Australian summer!)

The Power To Change

Even though she was frustrated with her injury, she also felt so incredibly lucky: Not only because she was certain she would make a full recovery, but thanks to her professional knowledge, she knew exactly what it would take to get back to her active life.

Her story on Wellness Force Radio is that of overcoming the inner and outer challenges of this devastating injury, and the road to creating mobility, energy, and being able to thrive again in her profession and in her life.

Thanks to Caitlin's both professional experience working with clients around the world, plus her own personal experience of this serious injury, she now helps clients globally with a realistic, balanced and motivational approach towards health and wellbeing.

From Michael's Book: "Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Courage is action in the face of fear.” When we feel fear, we’re paralyzed. When we take action in the face of that fear, we become courageous. When we become courageous, we become confident. When we become confident, we become powerful. When we become powerful, we become risk-takers. When we become risk-takers, we’re moving on up to the Skinny Branches of the tree, and now we’re inspiring other people to do the same." -Michael Strasner

I've been so pumped to be able to bring on a guest like Julianna that not only is a master at empowering others to change their thinking, but most importantly, to change their behavior through the power of mindfulness and meditation.

Numerous scientific studies have shown clear and wide ranging benefits of mindfulness including stress and anxiety reduction, strengthened immune system, heightened EI and creativity to name just a few.

In fact, Julianna herself was drawn to mindfulness 18 years ago, to manage debilitating anxiety. With over 90 weeks of immersive silent retreat training in both mindfulness and zen in addition to her daily practice, Julianna has racked up 12,000 plus hours of formal practice time, rewiring her brain and creating a new normal for herself. This enables her to truly be of service to her clients.

Currently, Julianna is developing onsite and online mindfulness training for enterprise clients and consumers as well as delivering keynotes, privately coaching executives in sales and leadership, performance professionals, TV personalities, entrepreneurs engaged in personal growth, and group training company leaders interested in preventative health care and enhancing the work environment, through mindfulness meditation.

In a recent study at UCLA comparing long-term meditators’ brains with non-meditators, the results of Julianna’s MRI led to interviews on ABC, Globo and Reuters news outlets, about the benefits of Mindfulness practice. Using the system of Basic Mindfulness, which has been researched at Carnegie Mellon, the University of Vermont, and Harvard Medical Center (with breakthrough results), Julianna’s emphasis is on helping clients find those specific strategies most relevant for their life and professional environment.

As an expert in the system, Julianna teaches clients how to strategically implement practice for specific challenges and practice in action, leading to accelerated growth, giving clients a way to develop skills on the go and providing invaluable tools for self empowerment.

Just as a physical trainer improves your workout, working with a mindfulness meditation trainer deepens and strengthens your skills, providing the necessary perspective, feedback and support so you maximize the potential of your practice.

Mindfulness provides an excellent complement to any other self-healing work you may be doing. In fact, your practice will enhance all the activities of your life.

What do we do when diet and exercise don't work? Do hormones and our nervous system hold the key? Today, I'm excited and honored to have Reed Davis on Wellness Force Radio to unlock the answers and uncover the hidden causes of weight gain.

Support Wellness Force Radio:

Reed is the Founder of the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN) Certification Course.  He is known as one of the most successful and experienced clinicians in the world, having provided functional lab assessments to over 10,000 clients for hormone, adrenal, digestive, immune and detoxification issues as well as infections, infestations, food sensitivities and chronic stress-related problems.

Reed served as a Health Director and Case Manager for over 15 years and now teaches a course in functional medicine with over 2,000 trainees in 50 countries. He is also a Clinical Advisor at BioHealth Laboratory where he helps doctors interpret lab test results and develop natural protocols to restore function instead of just treating the symptoms.

While serving for many years as the CNT and Case Manager, Reed Davis made his own observations about who got better and who did not. The patients who improved the most were the ones working as close to the underlying cause as possible, and not simply treating the symptoms. Wanting to help as many people as possible, Reed employed functional lab testing as it applies to nutrition and other natural protocols with thousands of patients.

Educating others became a passion and provided a mission that Reed carries out to this day. While systematizing the work, Reed came to the realization that he had discovered an emerging field. He named this growing body of work Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® and founded the certification course.
